Webb Sounds Off On Iraq
Jim Webb on the attack against the Bush Administration on the War Against Terror being waged in Iraq. From FoxNews:
"It pains me as an American that our casualties are again escalating while this president and his followers are still incapable of bringing forward an intelligent, commonsense approach to ending our involvement there."So, what's your plan, dude? Let's look at his website, specifically the page on Iraq (webbforsenate.com/issues/issues.php#iraq sorry, you'll have to cut and paste the link…I don't want to inflate his yahoo or google rank):
The first step would be for this Administration to say unequivocally that our country has no desire to occupy Iraq in the long term.Correct me if I am wrong (and I don't believe I am), but hasn't President Bush repeatedly said that we have no desire to maintain a permanent presence in Iraq, that the goal is achieve a stable government and able military and police forces capable of securing their country, then leaving? Okay, there is probably some wiggle room there to allow some American troops to stay their longer, however, that would only happen at the specific invitation of the host country (Iraq) just as has been done with numerous other countries, like Spain (where I served in the Air Force, though that base is no longer used by the U.S.), Turkey, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and the list goes on. Let's face it, the troops want to accomplish their mission and come home.
…begin immediate discussions with those countries that are culturally and historically invested in Iraq, and arguably aligned with us, to become overtly involved in a diplomatic solution, taking responsibility at some level for future stability among Iraq's competing factions.Again, the Bush Administration has actively been pursuing this course since military operations ended in 2003.
Basically, what Webb is pushing as a path to resolving the War in Iraq is the same plan that the Bush Administration is already pursuing and that Webb and other Democrats have poo-pooed as failed policy.
What really gets me is this bit:
The war in Lebanon today is a direct result of the Bush Administration's complete failure of policy in the Middle East.Webb's assertion that the current hostilities in Lebanon are a result of Bush's policy is ludicrous.
If Lebanon had disarmed Hezbollah, instead of letting that pack of terrorist thugs run their country, Israel would not have had to re-enter Lebanon. Israel has every right to defend itself from its enemies, and with Hezbollah operating with near impunity, much like the North Vietnamese did, operating from Cambodia during the Vietnam War.
Hezbollah has operated out of Lebanon for decades, raining rockets down on Israel daily for years now, and frequently crossing the border to kidnap and hold hostage Israeli soldiers.
Let's face it. According to the hard-left, anything bad going on in the world is Bush's fault, and they have no plan of their own to solve the problem's we're now facing.
