Comrade Chavez Re-Elected in Venezuela
This is SO not a surprise.
Comrade Hugo Chavez was re-elected in Venezuela. He has pledged to push for a more "radical" form of socialism as Comrade Chavez moves himself and his country further ot the left into totalitarianism. He also intends to form a "broader" against United States influence in Latin America.
Off of FoxNews
Chavez, who says he sees Fidel Castro as a father, dedicated his victory to the ailing 80-year-old Cuban leader, and called it a blow against President Bush."It's another defeat for the devil, who tries to dominate the world," Chavez told the crowd of red-shirted supporters, who listened to him under pouring rain. "Down with imperialism. We need a new world."
All this from a man who has allied himself with roque states that support terrorism: Iran and Syria.
His victory would be better described as a victory for totalitarianism and a defeat for Liberty and Human Rights in this south American nation.
Rosales, a key opponent, has stated he will continue to oppose Chavez and his government. How long before he gets tossed in prison for his opposition?

dude, I am sooo sorry to let you know that prior to Chavez, there had been media censorship. After Chavez, ther was free speech... This doesn't look like a step towards totalitarianism, it just looks like a step away from America and its bad policies in the world.

I think you need to lay off the koolaid a bit. Do you even know where totalitarianism in on the political spectrum? When Chavez pre-emptively invades a sovereign nation under false pretenses, you might have a case for the charge of totalitarianism. Until then, let's look to Venezuela as an example of how smoothly a democracy can take place anywhere.

Totalitarianism? Yup Sqotty knows as do I, it's 90 miles off the florida keys my friend, and what Chavez aspires to.
On free speech, I am reminded of the old joke: A Soviet diplomat and an American were talking. The American said,"You know the great thing about Ameirca" You can go to Time Square and shout 'Down with Eisenhower!' and no body will haul you away. The Soviet replied that it was the same in his country, that you could go to Red Square and shout "Down with Eisenhower" and no one would haul you away either.
Another thing to recall my liberal friends, just because Chavez hates GWB, he's not a good guy.

Well, annarboriter, it's kind of hard for me to lay off the koolaid since it is obvious by your statements that you drank it all.
If you seriously believe that Bush, by the invasion of Iraq (where over 500 chemical weapons have been recovered since 2003) is totalitarianism, you've got some serious problems.
Venezuela is NOT an example of a Democracy. As Bill points out, Comrade Chavez is aspiring to be like his hero, Fidel Castro. This isn't rhetoric, but fact. Read the interviews in the papers that Chavez has given.
Chavez has also allied with Syria and Iran, both of which are totalitarian regimes. And keep in mind that Iran and Syria are supporting terrorist groups and sectarian violence in Iraq, destabilizing the fledgling democracy there.
Let's also remember that Chavez is pushing to repeal the term limits on the office of presidency in Venezuela, so as to pave the way for his becoming "El Presidente" for life.

Jazz -
Venezuela is ranked 115 on "freedoms" with "Freedom of the press" being listed as "noticeable problems." That's anything but a free press. Further, they have ZERO economic freedoms, listed as "unfree" when it comes to economic freedoms. On the flipside, they are listed as being reasonably free where civil liberties are concerned. We'll see how long that lasts!
Here's a source of info: Wikipedia Freedom Index
By the way, you should also know that the Constitution of the Soviet Union provided for Freedom of Speech and a Free Press. We all know the truth of that one.
