Obama: Liberal Reason and Fact

Since Barack Obama, the current flavor of the month or the Liberal-Left, is in the news yet again. In this piece from the Examiner, we learn:

"The arguments of liberals are more often grounded in reason and fact," the Illinois Democrat wrote in "The Audacity of Hope," a memoir published last year.

There are two problems with this statement by Obama. The first is that he must be implying that conservatives to not base their arguments in reason and fact. This is rather insulting and condescending for someone to claim, especially from a would be president.

Frankly, on many issues, Liberals do not base their arguments on reason or fact. Take the Global Warming hysteria. Sure, the climate is warming, but this is part of the natural cycle of the Earth. It was only 40 years ago that the hysteria was about a coming ice age. Go figure.

The War on Iraq, the Liberal-Left claim, cannot be won. Yet just a year or so ago, many, including former presidential candidate and still senator Kerry were claiming we needed to send more troops to Iraq in order to win.

Social Security reform is another issue that Dems refuse to discuss, despite the fact that it will go belly up probably in the next decade.

Basing their arguments of reason and fact? Sounds like a combination of scare tactics and hogwash to me. But that doesn't mean anything to the MoveOn (to France) crowd. And so long as that is true, the Liberal-Left will continue to dish out the propaganda and ignore reason and facts.

Harper: Kyoto a Socialist Scheme

Kyoto and Global Warning are in the news again. As usual, the MSM is taking the side of the Loony-Left that Global Warming is Man's fault, and not part of the natural cycle of the Earth and the Cosmos.

Canada's Harper gets it right, referring to Kyoto as nothing more than a socialist scheme to tax wealthy nations. From CBC News:

"We're gearing up now for the biggest struggle our party has faced since you entrusted me with the leadership," Harper's letter says.

"I'm talking about the 'battle of Kyoto' - our campaign to block the job-killing, economy-destroying Kyoto accord."

Harper, like Bush, gets it right. Kyoto would be very damaging in the U.S., and any other highly Westernized country, like Canada, Japan, Australia, the U.K., to name a few.

It would suck wealth out of our economies, and shift it to smaller/poorer countries, most of which have corrupt governments that would not use the funds to build up their country's economies, but shift it to their own personal bank accounts.

Never mind the fact that there are a growing number of scientists that are refuting Kyoto as being based on nothing more than junk science.

There are also two new books out that look to be worth a read. Unstoppable Global Warming and The Chilling Stars. Time to put those on the reading list.

Blue Streak On CA Spanking Ban

Gotta love the Liberal-Left, especially the media types, and how they use words to twist things to get their agenda across. The current big example is the controversial spanking ban being floated in my former home state of California. The ban is being pushed by Leftist Assemblyman Sally Lieber, and in interviews used beating, abusing, and hitting to be an interchangeable word with spanking. The difference is huge.

When a person hits someone, it is with the intent to do bodily injury. When one spanks a child, it is to get the message across that their behavior is unacceptable, but not do injury. If spanking is used, it should be when all other methods of disciplining a child has failed.

Here's a bit from the Blue Streak:

Occasional spanking may not hurt kids, the studies find, but I've yet to meet or read a child psychiatrist who recommends it as a first resort in raising kids. If you can't hit your wife, your friends, even your pets, why should you be able to hit babies?

This quote strikes another chord, using babies instead of children, as well has substituting the word hit for spank. It is never okay to strike a baby. As a parent, I have serious problems with anyone who believes striking an infant in any way for any reason as being acceptable. Babies are too young to understand if a parent finds their behavior unacceptable. Besides, their world consists of eat, sleep, poop, and exploring their new surroundings.

Children, on the other hand, are capable of understanding the difference between right and wrong, and need to be taught those differences, and disciplined when they break the rules. However, the difference between spanking a child that is misbehaving and beating a child to inflict injury is huge. Laws are already inplace to protect children from abuse. However, when you make it a criminal offense to spank a child, you take away one of the most important tools a parent has to discipline a child.

Don't get me wrong here, I don't think spanking should be used as a primary tool, but as a tool to discipline when all else fails. It should never be done with the intent to inflict physical harm. God willing, I hope and pray to never have to use such a tactic. It took some pretty serious misbehavior on my part to warrant a spanking growing up, and I did get spanked a couple of times, and I earned those times. But I was never hit or beaten.

Kerry Calls U.S. INternationa Pariah

This is definitely a Moonbat moment. From CBS News:

"When we walk away from global warming, Kyoto, when we are irresponsibly slow in moving toward AIDS in Africa, when we don't advance and live up to our own rhetoric and standards, we set a terrible message of duplicity and hypocrisy," Kerry said.

"So we have a crisis of confidence in the Middle East - in the world, really. I've never seen our country as isolated, as much as a sort of international pariah for a number of reasons as it is today."

Thus spake Flipper Kerry while at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, while sharing the stage with Mohammad Khatami, former president of terror state Iran.

The United States has done more for AIDS in Africa than any other country, on any continent. We have sent BILLIONS of our TAX DOLLARS there, as well as huge amounts of charitable giving through various non-government agencies, including through religious organizations.

Walking away from Kyoto was the right thing to do, as it is meant to break the financial backs of the American people, never mind the fact that "Global Warming" is all part of the natural rhythm of the Earth's climate. It wasn't all that long ago that scientists were predicting the Earth was entering another ice age. The Kyoto plan was set forth based on flawed computer models. Any software engineer knows that computer models can be tailored to return the results you want. And the designers of those models have all stated that their models were flawed, not taking into account many variables that impact the climate.

As for the "crisis of confidence in the Middle East," we have Leftist Democrats, like Kerry, who are not supporting the mission there, not supporting the troops, and not providing the backbone to show the terrorists in Iraq that the U.S. has the moral fortitude to get the job done.

If the U.S. is an "international pariah," it is thanks to Kerry and others of his ilk.

Congratulations, Flipper, you are a Moonbat. But then, we knew that already.

Terror Leaders Flee To Iran

For those still poo-pooing "the surge," it is now apparent that the terrorists in Iraq are taking it seriously. From FoxNews:

Death squad leaders have fled Baghdad to evade capture or killing by U.S. and Iraqi forces before the start of the troop "surge" and security crackdown in the capital.

A former senior Iraqi minister said most of the leaders loyal to Muqtada al-Sadr, the radical anti-American cleric, had gone into hiding in Iran.

Among those said to have fled is Abu Deraa, theShiite militia leader whose appetite for sectarian savagery has been compared to that of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, who was killed last year.

I also seem to recall a blurb that al-Sadr is trying to make "peace" with the Iraqi government, as he now knows he isn't going to get the same second chance he received in 2004 if he continues with his death squad operations.

That many are now "hiding in Iran" further proves the point that Iran has been fueling much of the sectarian violence that has been going on in Iraq during the last few years.

Hopefully "the surge" (sounds like the name of a hockey team) will prove successful. We need victory in Iraq in order to bring stability to that country. We should not settle for anything less than that, nor should the people of Iraq.

AC-130 Gunships

The AC-130 gunship series is the most heavily armed close-air support combat aircraft currently in use. The models currently active ar ethe AC-130H Spectre Gunship (deployed 1972) and the AC-130U Spooky Gunship (deployed 1995).

These gunships have seen active service recently in Somalia, laying down ordnance on al-Qaeda encampments in that country.

Both are armed with a 105mm cannon, as well as a 40mm grenade launcher and twin 20mmVulcans (Spectre) or a 25mm gatling gun (Spooky).

Michael Moore Presents Plan For Iraq Victory

Michael "Double Chocolate Malt" Moore has hit on a plan to win in Iraq. As ludicrous as it sounds, it is a workable plan. There are, however, a few very serious drawbacks. First, is plan is meant as "satire," for whatever that's worth. But, since he is the darling of the Liberal-Left that has run amuck in the Democratic Party, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone, say Nancy Pelosi, take the idiot seriously. Here's what the DCM Moore recommends as a plan for victory in Iraq:

Listen, can I be frank? Sending in 20,000 more troops just ain't gonna do the job. That will only bring the troop level back up to what it was last year. And we were losing the war last year! We've already had over a million troops serve some time in Iraq since 2003. Another few thousand is simply not enough to find those weapons of mass destruction! Er, I mean... bringing those responsible for 9/11 to justice! Um, scratch that. Try this -- BRING DEMOCRACY TO THE MIDDLE EAST! YES!!!

You've got to show some courage, dude! You've got to win this one! C'mon, you got Saddam! You hung 'im high! I loved watching the video of that -- just like the old wild west! The bad guy wore black! The hangmen were as crazy as the hangee! Lynch mobs rule!!!

Look, I have to admit I feel very sorry for the predicament you're in. As Ricky Bobby said, "If you're not first, you're last." And you being humiliated in front of the whole world does NONE of us Americans any good.

Sir, listen to me. You have to send in MILLIONS of troops to Iraq, not thousands! The only way to lick this thing now is to flood Iraq with millions of us! I know that you're out of combat-ready soldiers -- so you have to look elsewhere! The only way you are going to beat a nation of 27 million -- Iraq -- is to send in at least 28 million! Here's how it would work:

The first 27 million Americans go in and kill one Iraqi each. That will quickly take care of any insurgency. The other one million of us will stay and rebuild the country. Simple.

Now, I know you're saying, where will I find 28 million Americans to go to Iraq? Here are some suggestions:

1. More than 62,000,000 Americans voted for you in the last election (the one that took place a year and half into a war we already knew we were losing). I am confident that at least a third of them would want to put their body where their vote was and sign up to volunteer. I know many of these people and, while we may disagree politically, I know that they don't believe someone else should have to go and fight their fight for them -- while they hide here in America.

2. Start a "Kill an Iraqi" Meet-Up group in cities across the country. I know this idea is so early-21st century, but I once went to a Lou Dobbs Meet-Up and, I swear, some of the best ideas happen after the third mojito. I'm sure you'll get another five million or so enlistees from this effort.

3. Send over all members of the mainstream media. After all, they were your collaborators in bringing us this war -- and many of them are already trained from having been "embedded!" If that doesn't bring the total to 28 million, then draft all viewers of the FOX News channel.

Mr. Bush, do not give up! Now is not the time to pull your punch! Don't be a weenie by sending in a few over-tired troops. Get your people behind you and YOU lead them in like a true commander in chief! Leave no conservative behind! Full speed ahead!

What Michael Moron is proposing is the entire annihilation of the people of Iraq. Of course, in true chickendove fashion, Moore does not intend that he, or others that think like he does, should have to serve in the armed forces, or go do such dirty work as he has outlined.

Moore's rhetoric continues to be as offensive as ever, and shows what level of intellect he is capable of, which isn't saying very much. Of course, those who think he's great, like Jimmy Carter, aren't any better.

What is even more sickening about Moore's tirade is that he seems to believe it is the Bush policy (or perhaps he believes it SHOULD be the Bush policy) to kill every Iraqi. Moore seems to like the "kill 'em all" idea. I don't know why, but it sure doesn't sit well with me, and I don't think the people of Iraq would be too thrilled with it either.

Maybe, just maybe, one day I will learn why Moore and his kind are such a bunch of hate mongers.

Meanwhile, we should let his plan lie on a waste heap, 'cause that is where it belongs. Ever get the feeling he is still in mourning over Saddam's execution?

Iran Set To Bring More Nuclear Centrifuges Online

Looks like Iran is pushing towards nuclear weapons again. This is off of FoxNews:

Iran expects to start installing thousands of centrifuges in an underground facility next month, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Friday. The installation would pave the way to large-scale uranium enrichment, a potential way of making nuclear weapons.

Iran has yet to cease its pursuit of refining uranium to high levels of purity, despite calls from the International community to cease such operations. Diplomacy has not worked with Iran, which is not surprising, as they are intent on having things their way only. Diplomacy can only work when all parties involved are interested in reaching the same goals.

Emplacing the centrifuges underground, most probably deep underground, is a way to safeguard their operations from observation and from attack.

Iran has repeatedly called for the annihilation of Israel, as well as threatened the U.S. Add to that its ongoing operations inside of Iraq, disrupting that fledgling democracy, should it complete its plans and develop nuclear weapons, the dynamics in the Middle East will shift dramatically, and not in a good direction.

New Plan For Iran Agents In Iraq

It looks as though we are about to play a little more "hard ball" with Iranian agents operating in Iraq. From FoxNews:

The U.S. military have received the OK to kill or capture Iranian operatives found inside Iraq, the Washington Post reported Friday, as part of an effort to destabilize Tehran's influence in Iraq and the Middle East.

Citing government and counterterrorism officials, the Post reported the move by President Bush is also part of a strategy to compel Iran to give up its nuclear program.

It is common knowledge that Iran has been funneling money, arms and personnel into Iraq in support of Islamic Fundamentalist groups. The Media has reported on this on numerous occasions. Up until now, Iranian agents have been handled with kid gloves, released once they have been identified, and DNA/retina scans/fingerprints have been taken.

This change in policy will send a signal to the Ayatollahs in Iran that their continued interference in Iraq will not be tolerated.

Unless, of course, the Democrats have their way and pull U.S. troops out of Iraq, thus ending the Coalition, and jeopardizing everything that has been accomplished throughout that region. Such will send a signal to Iran that they will have a free hand in Iraq, and it will become a satellite state of the Ayatollahs, just as Lebanon is not much more than a surrogate of Syria.

Russian Caught In Nuke materials Deal

FoxNews is reporting that man in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia has been convicted for attempting to sell a small amount of weapons grade Uranium.

The Russian who tried to sell the uranium to an undercover agent was identified as Oleg Khinsagov, who appeared to have connections to organized crime, but leads to terrorist connections were still being investigated.

Khinsagov, who was arrested in a rundown apartment in the Georgian Capital of Tblisis, believed the undercover agent who was making the buy was an Islamic radical from Turkey.

Georgian officials said attempts to trace the nuclear material and investigate the man's claim that he had access to larger quantities have foundered from a lack of assistance from Russia.

The man arrested also asserted that he was able to obtain larger quantities of U-235. Although the amount Khinsagov was in possession of was stated as four ounces, this is serious, as it only takes about 12 pounds for a small nuke.

That he also believed he was selling it to a "Islamic radical from Turkey" also indicates that he would be willing to sell it al-Qaeda. Luckily, this cretin is now out of circulation, at least for the next 8-10 years.

Set aside all of the political carping going on around the attempted sale of weapons grade uranium, this may only be the tip of the iceberg. Has Khinsagov sold, or attempted to sell U-235 in the past? If so, who to and where is it now? Who are his suppliers? And, finally, how much of this stuff is there out there on the black market now?

Kerry Not Running In '08

Flipper Kerry announced that he will not seek the Presidency in '08. There is plenty of time to live up to his moniker and change his mind. From Boston.com:

"Two years ago I sought the presidency to lead us on a different course. I'm proud of the campaign that we ran," Kerry said.

"We came close, Mr. President, certainly close enough to be tempted to try again," he continued. "There are powerful reasons to want to continue that fight now. But I've concluded that this isn't the time for me to mount a presidential campaign. It is the time to put my energy to work as part of the majority in the Senate, to do all I can to end this war and strengthen our security.

He didn't come all that close, something like missing at by a couple of million votes. Plus close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and nuclear weapons. Be that as it may, based on Kerry's recent performance in the '06 campaign, it should still prove to be fun to watch as he continues to "botch jokes" and have other mishaps involving snowboarding and secret service agents.

I have no doubt that the main reason he is not running is who he would face in the primary. The leftie-duo of Hillary and Obama, both of whom can out campaign Kerry faster than you can say "Swift Boat Veteran." Both are far more liberal and dangerous to American Liberty than Kerry would be.

Election '08 is off to an interesting start, with Hillary harnessing the new technology to its fullest. Something the GOP better get a grasp of before to long, otherwise, we could be hearing Madame President and First Philanderer two years from now.

New Rhetoric From Zawahiri

Al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda's mouthpiece, operating from a spider hole somewhere in the mountains of either Afghanistan or Pakistan, released another propaganda speech, this time in response to the Bush Adminstrations "Surge" plan, sending 20,000 more troops to Iraq (mainly to Baghdad). It consists of much of the same rhetoric as before. From FoxNews:

In the message, which includes English subtitles, al-Zawahiri calls on President Bush to send the entire American Army to Iraq, saying the Mujahadeen (warriors engaged in jihad) are capable of destroying the equivalent of 10 armies.

Al-Zawahiri warns that peace is impossible if Americans continue to follow Bush's policies.

"If we are secure, you might be secure; and if we are safe, you might be safe," al-Zawahiri says. "And if we are struck and killed, you will definitely -- with Allah's permission -- be struck and killed."

So far, the Mujahadeen have not even defeated, let alone destroyed, one U.S. Army, let alone 10, as Zawahiri boasts. And he is only half-right where peace is concerned. They started their war with the U.S. years before Bush was elected. It will not end when Bush leaves office two years from now, regardless of the electoral outcome. Al-Qaeda will continue its war with the west whether a Republican or a Democrat occupies the Oval Office. The only difference will be the intensity of the war, and where it will take root next.

Zawahiri continues with a claim that if they are secure, then America might be secure. In other words, they are keeping the path of terrorism open. If we pull out of the Middle East, leaving them to their own devices, we will still not be safe. Al-Qaeda and those who would flock to its banner would look at our leaving Iraq prematurely as a victory for their cause, and will be emboldened to pursue more attacks on America.

Leaving Iraq prematurely would seriously damage U.S. credibility throughout the world, and that is also the point. Either we have what it takes to get the job done and establish Liberty in Iraq, or we don't. One path leads to victory, the other to defeat and more terrorism.

Sad News Today - Another Death Howl

My wife told me the news when I got home tonight that an old friend in California, known to many in Bay Area Fandom as Auntie Sally, or in her Klingon persona, qraS, passed away last night. She died of cancer, which she had been battling for nearly the past year.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any scanned photos of her to post with this. I’ll try and dig one up over the next day or so, unless my wife, Sue, beats me to it.

For those of you active in Klingon Fandom, let out a death howl as another Warrior has departed for Sto-Vo-Kor.

Obama's A Rock Star?

Interesting column on The Blue Streak, discussing the strong and weak points of the '08 Presidential Campaign, and speaking well of Barrack Obama. The piece focuses on two points: the experience of the current main contenders (Hillary, Edwards, Obama) and the potential of the Internet to influence the election. It makes some good points.

The internet will decide this election. Whoever figures out how to use it best, whoever is helped most or hurt least by its reach, will win.

It could be Obama.

The internet makes it possible to communicate with more people at less cost than ever before. It makes it possible for an unknown to become well known faster than ever before, for an organization to grow at warp speed, for money to be raised in buckets with the flash of a click. It has the potential to engage people in politics who would never go to events, are on no one's old list, are outsiders to the political process. It intensifies the scrutiny and magnifies the result, which is both a risk but also a vital opportunity for a candidate who most Americans know virtually nothing about.

With the internet, Everything that happens, what goes right and what goes wrong, will be instantly available to everyone. Mistakes will be magnified, viewed by millions literally in moments; but so will triumphs. Momentum will be built or lost with speed we once could barely imagine.

As seen in the '06 election, the Internet, especially the blogosphere, and new tech such as youtube.com. Youtube and similar video sharing sites made it possible for people with digital cameras to capture some quite damning footage and make such videos available for wide and rapid distribution.

The is no doubt that the Internet will continue to play a significant role in future elections as it is the new media, or, as some would say, the new Liberty Tree, the place where like minded patriots in the Revolutionary period gathered and discussed ideas.

The issue will not be whether Obama has good enough experience, but whether he is good enough as a candidate. He can't afford to say the wrong thing. A mistake will be read as not ready. But he has no record of bad votes to defend, no troublesome inconsistent statements from past campaigns to explain away.

The piece also hits on Obama's experience favorably, stating that he has held elected office longer than either of the other two front runners, etc. This is not, nor should it be, a quality one looks for when electing experience. Time in office does not equate experience. All it means is they have shown up for work. As for bad votes to defend, that is a matter of point of view. There are those of us who still believe that Liberating Iraq was the right thing to do. Susan Estrich is one of those that believes otherwise. That's her privilege and right.

What is important is Statesmanship, values, honor integrity. Do any of these so called "rock stars" have these qualities? That's the deciding factor for me, regardless of political party affiliation. Are they Statesmen?

Comrade Chavez to U.S. :"Go to Hell, Gringos"

Comrade Hugo Chavez is at it again. From FoxNews:

The National Assembly, which is controlled by the president's political allies, is expected to give final approval this week to what it calls the "enabling law," which would give Chavez the authority to pass a series of laws by decree during an 18-month period.

On Friday, U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said Chavez's plans under the law "have caused us some concern."

Chavez rejected Casey's statement in his broadcast, saying: "Go to hell, gringos! Go home!"

This comes after Chavez's recent call to nationalize (confiscate) electrical and telecom industries as well as the additional powers sought by Comrade Chavez that Casey has critical of, and rightfully so.

If Chavez is granted the power to execute law by "presidential" decree, this will set him up in a position to rule Venezuela as he pleases. So much for Liberty and Democracy in Venezuela.

Cullen Calls For Silencing Scientific Debate On Global Warming

Ms. Cullen, a self-proclaimed expert on Global Warming has this to say about those who do not subscribe to her viewpoint:

I'd like to take that suggestion a step further. If a meteorologist has an AMS Seal of Approval, which is used to confer legitimacy to TV meteorologists, then meteorologists have a responsibility to truly educate themselves on the science of global warming. (One good resource if you don't have a lot of time is the Pew Center's Climate Change 101.)

Meteorologists are among the few people trained in the sciences who are permitted regular access to our living rooms. And in that sense, they owe it to their audience to distinguish between solid, peer-reviewed science and junk political controversy. If a meteorologist can't speak to the fundamental science of climate change, then maybe the AMS shouldn't give them a Seal of Approval. Clearly, the AMS doesn't agree that global warming can be blamed on cyclical weather patterns. It's like allowing a meteorologist to go on-air and say that hurricanes rotate clockwise and tsunamis are caused by the weather. It's not a political statement...it's just an incorrect statement.

Well, she is half-right, there is a big difference between peer-reviewed science and junk pseudo-science with a political agenda. Unfortunately, the peer review process is controlled by those who subscribe to "the one true way" of it's man's fault the Earth is warming.

Her call for decertification of meteorologists who to not subscribe to the "one true wayism" of the "Global Warming" is an outrage.

Scientific consensus can only be given when the theory is proven to be law, which in the case of man's contributions to carbon emissions and the overall impact is still under debate, it is people like Ms. Cullen who want to silence differing opinions.

What is laughable, is that Cullen calls herself a scientist, and a meteorologist, yet she claims that it is incorrect to state that hurricanes rotate clockwise. Here's a bit of real scientific facts for Ms. Cullen (from wikipedia):

A tropical cyclone is a warm storm system fueled by thunderstorms near its center. It feeds on the heat released when moist air rises and the water vapor in it condenses. The term describes the storm's origin in the tropics and its cyclonic nature, which means that its circulation is counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Tropical cyclones are distinguished from other cyclonic windstorms such as nor'easters, European windstorms, and polar lows by the heat mechanism that fuels them, which makes them "warm core" storm systems. Depending on their location and strength, there are various terms by which tropical cyclones are known, such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, and tropical depression.

Egads! She's supposed to have a Ph.D in this stuff. In her case Ph.D. must mean "Piled higher and Deeper."

It gets better, or worse, depending on your point of view. From the epw.sentate.gov blog:

Cullen's call for decertification of TV weatherman who do not agree with her global warming assessment follows a year (2006) in which the media, Hollywood and environmentalists tried their hardest to demonize scientific skeptics of manmade global warming. Scott Pelley, CBS News 60 Minutes correspondent, compared skeptics of global warming to "Holocaust deniers" and former Vice President turned foreign lobbyist Al Gore has repeatedly referred to skeptics as "global warming deniers."

And:

In addition, Cullen's December 17, 2006 episode of "The Climate Code" TV show, featured a columnist who openly called for Nuremberg-style Trials for climate skeptics. Cullen featured Grist Magazine's Dave Roberts as an eco-expert opining on energy issues, with no mention of his public call to institute what amounts to the death penalty for scientists who express skepticism about global warming. See: http://epw.senate.gov/fact.cfm?party=rep&id=264568

These people are determined to silence opposition opinion and research that contradicts their assertions. This is scary stuff.

Yet, Cullen is undeterred. She calls herself a scientist and a skeptic. Yet her writings on her own blog show otherwise.

On her blog, a comment posted on her blog included a link to a site called Friends of Science, which has lots of useful information. On the front page is a chart that shows some interesting trends, including sun sport activity in relation to carbon emissions and warming. There is more to Global Warming than meets the eye, regardless of the source.

suspot_chart.gif

There are also a number of other sites out there doing similar work, as well as a number of publications, including Satannic Gases from the Cato Institute.

The bottom line is this: silencing opposing viewpoints is about as un-American as you can get regardless of the issue. And comparing people who question the validity of the "one true way of global warming" to "holocaust deniers" as is being done on a routine basis, is outrageous.

Red Star Tribune Sides With Communist China

Looks like the Red Star Tribune is living up to its name once again, this time taking the side of Communist China after that country successfully destroyed one of its weather satellites as a show of force, the old "we can knock out satellites, too." In its editorial today The Red Star Tribune states:

China's apparent success in felling a weather satellite with a missile presents a serious diplomatic and defense challenge to the United States. As worrying as the technical ability it required (not great; the U.S. ability to knock down satellites dates to 1985) are the intentions China signaled: It aims to be a force in missile defense and military uses of space. Washington, it seems, has been hanged with its own space weaponry rope. Perhaps now it will take seriously China's long-standing desires for international talks on military issues involving space.

Bush administration cries of foul and protests decrying China's militarization of space reek of hypocrisy. From the early days of the first Reagan administration, hawks in the Republican establishment have pursued dreams of space-based weapons systems with nary a concern over what anyone or any nation might think. Many others have always believed that anything even hinting at military use of space was a thoroughly bad idea. Blowing up satellites is a particularly bad idea, as the United States and Russia discovered decades ago, because it creates a great deal of space debris that puts other space vehicles at risk.

True, blowing up satellites does create debris fields that may be hazardous to other low-Earth orbit satellites. There is, however, a big difference between the intentions of the U.S. and those of Communist China. China has on many occasions, including as recently as 2006, threatened the use of nuclear weapons against the United States, particularly where our continued support of an independent Taiwan is concerned. The only reason for the Communist Chinese to pursue the development of satellite killers is to neutralize U.S. space-based missile defense systems (SDI).

China is only interested in terminating the U.S. ability to stop their nuclear missiles from striking their targets. This will give them a strategic advantage, militarily, over the United States. No SDI, no stopping incoming nukes, bye-bye USA.

Further, trusting Communist Dictators, or any dictator for that matter, to keep their word is foolish. Eisenhower trusted the Soviets to cease nuclear weapons development in the '50s, and that was proved to be trust misplaced, as the Soviets continued development, using the time bought through deceit to close the nuclear weapons gap that then favored the USA.

In the 1990s, former President Carter brokered the deal with North Korea that the Clintons signed off on, that handed nuclear technology to Kim Jong Il on the condition that Communist North Korea would cease all nuclear weapons programs. Again, we have learned that that was trust misplaced as they now have several nuclear weapons. Thanks to Democrats like Carter and the Clintons.

Iran claims to only be developing the refinement of nuclear materials for peaceful uses, yet they continue to call for the destruction of Israel, and could easily become the supplier of uranium 235 to al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, and other terrorist groups who would trade their lives to kill millions with a few well placed nukes. And that is a very easy thing to do, once they have a supplier of uranium 235, or plutonium.

Why is it, given this history, the Liberal Media and the Liberal-Left that today controls what was once a great political party, think the United States is the bullying bad guy, and that these dictatorships, who have murdered thousands, and in the case of China, millions, of their own people?

The editorial has more:

The Bush administration was then considering abrogating the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia because it was impinging on administration plans for its "Star Wars" programs. Bolton was asked: While neither China nor India is party to the ABM treaty, both nations' nuclear postures are predicated on the treaty's existence. Given that, shouldn't their concerns be considered before the United States unilaterally abrogates the treaty?

His answer dripped scorn, for the question and for its implication that perhaps the United States should consider what others think of U.S. actions. Well, he said, I guess we should just let foreign nations determine U.S. foreign policy.

Actually, the U.S. did not abrogate the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia. That treaty was with the Soviet Union, and when it finally ended up on the trash heap of history where it belonged, all treaties with the Soviet Union also ended.

As for China, or India for that matter (why didn't they mention Pakistan as well?), if they have "concerns" about a treaty between the U.S. and a country that no longer exists, why should it be considered as more important than U.S. concerns? Bolton's response is classic, and why I believe it is a disgrace that the Democrats in the Senate blocked his appointment to the United Nations. There is little doubt that the Liberal-Left and the Main Stream Media would prefer the United States defer all foreign policy (and in many cases, doemstic policy as well) to the foreign nations such as China, North Korea and Iran, or, better still, to the United Nations.

To the Red Star Tribune and the rest of the Liberal-Left controlled media, it is always the U.S. that is at fault when there are confrontations with other nations. They trust murdering dictators more than they trust our own leaders.

Military Aircraft Photo of the Week

I’ve been entertaining the idea of featuring Military Aircraft photo of the week for a while now, just to kind of commemorate my time in the Air Force, as well as show some images of the Military Aircraft past and present. I don’t know where this feature will go. The goal will be to post something on a weekly basis, most likely on Saturdays. It may drift from strictly Air Force to include Military Aviation History.

blackbird_iced1.jpg

The photo above is that of an SR-71 Blackbird encased in ice after a freezing rain hit the base. Taken at Lackland Airforce Base, Texas, Jan 16, 2007. (U.S. Air Force Photo, Lance Cheung.) The ice cycles hanging from the front of the aircraft makes for a very interesting image. In a way, I think it is stunningly beautiful.

California Asseblyman Pushes For Spanking Ban

Only in California would you see legislation being pushed to ban spanking, and only a California Liberal would come up with ludicrous rhetoric to defend such a proposal. The California Legislature is considering a proposal to ban the spanking of children under the age of three. From the San Jose Mercury News:

"I think it's pretty hard to argue you need to beat a child 3 years old or younger," Lieber said. "Is it OK to whip a 1-year-old or a 6-month-old or a newborn?"

The bill, which is still being drafted, will be written broadly, she added, prohibiting "any striking of a child, any corporal punishment, smacking, hitting, punching, any of that." Lieber said it would be a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail or a fine up to $1,000, although a legal expert advising her on the proposal said first-time offenders would probably only have to attend parenting classes.

The difference between a spanking and beating a child is huge. Lieber seems to think that a spanking and whipping are one and the same.

Now, I agree that hitting to do injury is abhorrent, but a spanking? Egads! And what sensible parent would consider spanking a 1-year old, or a new born, for that matter? Probably some liberal dingbat.

The idea is encountering skepticism even before it's been formally introduced. Beyond the debate among child psychologists -- many of whom believe limited spanking can be effective -- the bill is sure to face questions over how practical it is to enforce and opposition from some legislators who generally oppose what they consider "nanny government."

"Where do you stop?" asked Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, R-Irvine, who said he personally agrees children under 3 shouldn't be spanked but has no desire to make it the law. "At what point are we going to say we should pass a bill that every parent has to read a minimum of 30 minutes every night to their child? This is right along those same lines."

At least there are still a few sensible voices in California. The question is, will they stick to their guns (ewe, that's a bad word in California), and move towards preventing the continued creep towards "nanny state?" One could only hope. In the meantime, this is just one more reason why I won't move back to the Golden State. On the flip side, I probably know a lot of people who voted for this left-wingnut. I wonder if they realize what a wacko they sent to the State Assembly.

China Destroys Satellite

Looks like we may be in for a renewed arms race in space. China has successfully destroyed one of it's own satellite in a test to see if it could hit and destroy similar types of objects. The NY Times has this:

China successfully carried out its first test of an antisatellite weapon last week, signaling its resolve to play a major role in military space activities and bringing expressions of concern from Washington and other capitals, the Bush administration said yesterday.

Only two nations - the Soviet Union and the United States - have previously destroyed spacecraft in antisatellite tests, most recently the United States in the mid-1980s.

Arms control experts called the test, in which the weapon destroyed an aging Chinese weather satellite, a troubling development that could foreshadow an antisatellite arms race. Alternatively, however, some experts speculated that it could precede a diplomatic effort by China to prod the Bush administration into negotiations on a weapons ban.

Ed Morrisey, of Captain's Quarters, has this to say:

Does China intend on striking our sensitive military satellites? Perhaps not. This seems more like a pressure tactic by Beijing to get the US to change policy on space weapons. Last October, the Bush administration reiterated its stance on the issue, claiming that America needed a free hand in space for research and development, and specifically refused to eschew the kind of test the Chinese conducted yesterday. Now that China has demonstrated its capability to successfully launch the same kind of mission, the Chinese probably hope that the US will reconsider its position.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is a tactic to pressure the United States to give up a space based missile defense program. When SDI, or "Star Wars," was first put forth during the Reagan Administration, it was considered by those on the Left as provocative and could lead to hostilities with the Soviet Union. It did pressure the Soviets to the table, and, as the arms race escalated, brought about the downfall of the Soviet Empire.

Now, China, having successfully destroyed a satellite, is attempting to bring the U.S. to the table in an attempt to keep the U.S. from continuing to develop space-based missile defense.

As Morrissey points out in is blog article that the Chinese used a "blunt instrument" to destroy the satellite, resulting in a debris field that can, and probably will, interfere with other satellites currently in operation. There is no telling how long this debris field will pose a hazard to other satellites, and there is no doubt that any other satellites damaged or destroyed as a result of this test will not be compensated for by the Communists.

Heinlein wrote Starship Troopers in response to Soviet pressure on the Eisenhower administration to stop U.S. Development of nuclear weapons. At that time, the Soviets promised that they, too, would cease further development. It was not long before the Soviet lie was proven, and that particular treaty was not worth the paper it was written on.

Kim Jong Il was promised nuclear technology with the promise that North Korea would not use what they are given to develop nuclear weapons, and to cease any and all nuclear weapons programs. Their deceit on that bargain has also been proven.

Can anyone seriously believe that Communist China would cease developing space-based weaponry, or the tools to counter space-based weaponry because they said they would?

It is plainly obvious to me that they would not honor any such agreement made, but would claim it did not apply or otherwise ignore any such agreement, thus leaving the U.S. at a disadvantage.

Just because China has shown some capability to successfully destroy a satellite does not mean we should abandon development of space-based missile defense. It does mean we need to take that potential into account as development continues, and work out counter-measures to such threats.

The question is, whose word do you trust more: that of the United States, or that of Communist dictators? I think my choice is obvious.

Yet Another UN Scandal

More corruption and scandals with that darling of the Liberal-Left, the United Nations. IN this new episode, we learn that the UN Development Program was bilked of ten of millions of dollars by that other darling of the Liberal-Left, Kim Jong Il, dictator of North Korea. FoxNews has this on the issue:

Has North Korean leader Kim Jong Il subverted the United Nations Development Program, the $4 billion agency that is the U.N.'s main development arm, and possibly stolen tens of millions of dollars of hard currency in the process?

According to a top official of the U.S. State Department - using findings made by the U.N.'s own auditors - the answer appears to be a disturbing yes, so far as UNDP programs in North Korea itself are concerned.

And just as disturbingly, the U.N. aid agency bureaucracy has kept the scamming a secret since at least 1999 - while the North Korean dictator and his regime were ramping up their illegal nuclear weapons program and making highly publicized tests of intermediate range ballistic missiles.

The head of the UNDP during the time that this scamming took place was none other than Mark Malloch Brown, who has been extremely critical of President Bush's (and John Bolton's) demands that there be greater transparency in UN operations. One has to wonder why, with all the reports of abuse and corruption, from the "Oil for Food" prior to the invasion of Iraq, and the "Food for Sex" scandal, where UN Peace Keepers demanded sex in exchange for providing food aid in the Congo, that Malloch Brown would oppose greater transparency in UN operations.

The push for greater (or, better still, total) transparency and reform of the UN should continue. I suspect it will grind to a halt as the U.S. Congress is controlled by Liberal-Left Democrats who believe that the UN can do no wrong.

Audits of the UNDP (and other agencies) are considered to be "management tools" of the UN and are denied to those governments that actually pay the bills of the UN. Making these audits available to the United States and other governments as a matter of routine, instead of hiding them from those that supply the funding, is the first step to reforming the UN and ending the current "culture of sorruption" that has been the normal "modes operandi."

Democrats Force Agenda In U.S. House

House Democrats have declared victory in their first 100 hours by short-circuiting the deliberative process on six bills they rammed through the House of Representatives. From FoxNews:

The hours were clocked by measuring only the amount of time Congress debated the six items since convening the 110th Congress on Jan. 4. Republicans complained that Democrats were able to whip out the six bills in short order because they did not allow Republican involvement in the debate.

"House Democrats' first 100 hours has come to an end, and with it, we hope we'll see the beginning of the open and accountable discussion of the issues Americans deserve from their legislators," said Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., who argued Republicans wanted to work in a bipartisan way but Democrats refused to include them.

"Republicans look forward to working with the Democrat majority in the second 100 hours and beyond to achieve real progress on the issues Americans care about," Blunt said in a written statement.

The Democratic Party has once again proved that they are the party of partisan politics, declaring the U.S. shall be governed their way, "or the highway."

During the campaign season, the Democrats promised that they would ring in a new era of bipartisan politics and tun the most ethical Congress in the history of that august body. Those promises have now been proven to be nothing more than the empty rhetoric that it really was.

Any majority party can force an agenda through Congress by silencing opposition. This is, I believe, the first time that such has been so blatantly done in the United States. It is an embarrassment.

And it shows that the Democratic majority now in control of Congress does not have America's best interests at heart, nor does it care for the democratic process.

One of the bills calls for $15 BILLION of new fees, taxes and royalties on the oil industry. You know, the "evil" oil industry that wants nothing more than to line their pockets with record profits. Never mind the fact that the oil companies are publicly traded companies, and millions of Americans are sharing in that profit. If you have money in 401k (or similar) plans, mutual funds, and other similar investment instruments, chances are you own stock, albeit indirectly, in oil companies. Never mind the fact that they are one of the biggest contributors (through taxes, fees, royalties, etc.) to the government coffers.

Other legislation that the Democratic party forced through the House of representatives using their version of the Golden Rule (you know, the one that says "Silence is Golden, and Republicans should remain silent.").

A minimum wage increase that may have a detrimental impact on local economies where wages for high schoolers is currently below current Federal minimums (some states have minimum wages at that level already). This is also a good way to encourage youths to drop out of high school. See previous article on minimum wage increases.

Expanding Federal funding for stem cell research.

Cutting interest rates on student loans, rates that are already low, and on loans that are frequently not repaid.

All this, and more, without Republican input, or open, honest debate. And the Dems claim to be Democratic, and support bipartisan politics. Give me a break!

American Imam Spews Hate In U.K.

Abu Usamah at-Thahabi is one scary dude. I had not heard of the New Jersey born Imam, who is a convert to Islam, before this report on FoxNews.

A New Jersey-born Muslim cleric with links to a suspected Al Qaeda operative who surfaced at a college not far from the cleric's Peoria, Ill., mosque the day before the Sept. 11 attacks has found a new home.

The imam now is spewing his message of hate to a growing group of followers at a mosque in Birmingham, England.

His target: the United States, the United Kingdom, Christians and Jews.

Abu Usamah at-Thahabi, who preached at the Islamic Center of Peoria in 2001, is the subject of a British news documentary that revealed Monday how he regularly exhorts worshippers at the Green Lane Masjid, or mosque, in Birmingham to hate Westerners, whom he calls "pathological liars" and "kuffar," a derogatory term for non-Muslims.

It actually gets worse from there, quoting this worthless bag of (fill in the blank) as stating that kuffaar should be crucified and left hanging to bleed to death. Nice guy! Kuffaar is any non-Muslim, as well as any Muslim who isn't Muslim enough (gays, etc.).

This was all brought out by a British documentary program called Dispatches. Much of the material was garnered by an undercover reporter that managed to sneak a video camera into the Green Lane Mosque. It's very revealing, and currently viewable via You Tube courtesy of Sweetness and Light blog.

The Dispatches website has a short companion article with the following:

He captures chilling sermons in which Saudi-trained preachers proclaim the supremacy of Islam, preach hatred for non-Muslims and for Muslims who do not follow their extreme beliefs - and predict a coming jihad. "An army of Muslims will arise," announces one preacher. Another preacher said British Muslims must "dismantle" British democracy - they must "live like a state within a state" until they are "strong enough to take over."

This particular group is targeting the U.K., however, it is clear that such activities are taking place in the United States, and, most likely, other Western countries as well. We are not talking about main stream Muslims, but an extremist subset of Islam.

The group practices Wahhabism that preaches an extreme version of Islam, including "you can not show tolerance to other religions," and calling for Islamic dominance of the world. Wahhabism is also discussed in "The Looming Tower," including how it was not only allowed, but encouraged to flourish in Saudi Arabia by the Saudi Royal family.

All I have to say is: some religion of peace this is.

Star Tribune On Victory In Iraq

Interesting editorial from the Red Star Tribune on how Democrats are now being blamed for the "mess" in Iraq.

A new, pernicious line of argument is taking hold in Washington that should be clunked in the head until it dies. It holds that the Democrats in Congress are to blame for the mess in Iraq because they have offered no alternative around which Americans can rally, and that this is because they and their friends in the antiwar community want the United States to fail.

I believe it is correct to say that Democrats and their Liberal, anti-war, puppeteers are to blame, at least in part, the reasoning to do so is not due to reasons outlined in the editorial, but due to their continuous calls for withdrawing from Iraq, references to Iraq as being "another Vietnam," and various types of rhetoric, such as "No war for oil" and "Bush lied, people died." Instead of supporting the mission of our troops in Iraq, they continue to thwart the administration's plans that may bring victory, choosing to use Iraq as a political hockey puck in order to achieve their own politcal gain (which, as shown in the 2006 elections, had some impact on the composition of the new Congress).

It also doesn't help that our involvement in Iraq, as during our operations in Vietnam, garnered anti-war protests, and liberal celebrities using their stardom to convey an anti-war message. This emboldens the terrorists and sectarian death squads operating in Iraq. It also sends a signal to Iraq's neighbors, Syria and Iran, giving them a "green light" to continue to supply arms, money, and manpower to the anti-government forces operating in Iraq.

This is not Vietnam, nor should this war be compared to that war. Except for the home ground, where the media, the leftist anti-war zealots, and Liberal Democrats push for abandoning the fledgling democracy in Iraq before it has a chance to set down roots and anchor itself deep enough to overcome the challenges that terrorists and sectarian death squads pose.

Here is another fine example of the real reason we are having such troubles achieving victory in Iraq:

Underlying this reasoning is a bleak recognition that Bush's latest gambit, built around the so-called surge, won't work, coupled with some magical thinking: that indeed a formula exists which could reverse American fortunes and bring the Iraq expedition to a successful conclusion. But, the argument goes, Democrats have failed to embrace it, so this mess is their fault.

Lots of small, inconvenient facts are jettisoned to make this argument -- such as the growing number of Republicans who are joining their Democratic colleagues in opposition to the war. But the central, painful truth that gets ignored is this: Nothing can reverse American fortunes in Iraq. The United States already has failed. Bush failed. It's over. All that remains is working through the best way to get American troops out of Iraq.

There is a plan which can accomplish that, put forward by the Iraq Study Group (ISG). It entails shifting from a military to a political and diplomatic emphasis, strengthening efforts to train Iraqi troops and beginning the withdrawal of American combat forces. We wish the Democrats would use the power of the purse to force Bush's acceptance of the ISG approach. The political risk is that they would then be accused of undermining the troops. But that's a risk worth taking, and the Democrats have a good retort: They weren't the ones who put the troops in Iraq in the first place, in inadequate numbers with inadequate resources (remember the missing armor?). It now falls to the Democrats to keep the troops safe by the only effective way possible: getting them out of Iraq.

The understanding I have (and I could be mistaken) is that the "surge" was part of the plan put forth by the ISG. With five brigades being added to the area surrounding Baghdad, the hottest spot in Iraq, effectively doubling the number of "boots on the ground," it may be possible to finally securing that part of the country. That is the key to achieving victory in Iraq. Secure the capital and its immediate surroundings, and you have the basis to secure the rest of the country, and send a message to Iraq's enemies, most notably Iran, that their continued interference with Iraq will not be tolerated.

It is also false to say that the Democrats were not "the ones to put troops in Iraq in the first place." They all (with maybe one or two exceptions) voted in favor of liberating Iraq. Liberating Iraq was the right thing to do then, and it is the right thing to do today.

One thing the editorial does get right is that the bulk of Democrats never embraced the plan. The only reason for that is because it was put forth by President Bush, and not one of their own. I have no doubt that if it we had elected Gore in 2000 (and no, the election was not stolen from him), they (the Democrats in congress) would have rallied behind any plan he set forth. Of course, that would most likely be some superficial aerial bombing of Afghanistan with little or no effect on al-Qaeda, and Saddam Hussein would be alive and well, and continuing to butcher Iraq's that oppose him.

As for the "missing armor," that was the fault of Democrats voting against funding the necessary equipment for the troops in the field. Remember John Kerry's "I voted for the $87 billion before I voted against." A sizable part of that was for body armor and other equipment for the troops serving in Iraq. It is Congress that controls the purse strings of government, and if the troops were in Iraq with insufficient equipment, it is because Congress failed to provide the funding necessary to assure that the troops were properly equipped.

Somehow, I am not surprised by the extreme bias presented by the Red Star Tribune. The Main Stream Media has been, for some time now, nothing more than the propaganda arm for the left-wing of the Democratic party. In their opinion, Democrats can do no wrong and Republicans can do nothing right. Yeesh!

Kucinich Announces Plans To Revive Fairness Doctrine

Over on Captains Quarters, Cap'n Ed writes about Kucinich and his plans to revive the FCC Fairness Doctrine. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced over the weekend that he would be heading a House subcommittee that will be focusing on the FCC. FMQB has the details:

The Presidential candidate said that the committee would be holding "hearings to push media reform right at the center of Washington." The Domestic Policy Subcommittee of the House Government Reform Committee was to be officially announced this week in Washington, D.C., but Kucinich opted to make the news public early.

In addition to media ownership, the committee is expected to focus its attention on issues such as net neutrality and major telecommunications mergers. Also in consideration is the "Fairness Doctrine," which required broadcasters to present controversial topics in a fair and honest manner. It was enforced until it was eliminated in 1987.

Kucinich said in his speech that "We know the media has become the servant of a very narrow corporate agenda" and added "we are now in a position to move a progressive agenda to where it is visible."

The Fairness Doctrine was a tool to force broadcasters that allowed political punditry, opinion makers, would have to provide equal time for all points of view, in the public interest.

When the Fairness Doctrine was terminated during the Reagan Administration, this provided for the resurgence of the AM radio band that was on it's way to extinction, as FM radio had become the dominate radio band of choice for broadcasting. The end of the Fairness Doctrine set things in motion as it gave birth to political talk radio and the rise of Rush Limbaugh, who led the charge. Many others followed in Limbaugh's wake.

What would be the net impact of the return of the Fairness Doctrine? The end of political talk radio. As liberal/leftist ideas have failed to gain traction on talk radio and compete head-to-head in the American Spirit of Free Enterprise, while conservative ideas continue to dominate on the airwaves (both AM and FM now).

Bringing back the Fairness Doctrine would kill conservative political talk on the radio. Air America would lose as well, but few people, aside from Al Franken, would miss it. Reinstating this doctrine would squelch open debate on the airwaves (every conservative talk show I have listened to have routinely had callers and guests from the political left), and put yet another nail into the coffin of Free Speech.

Military Surplus Arming Our Enemies

There is a report on FoxNews that Iran and China have been using middlemen to acquire U.S. weapons technology that is forbidden to them. The use of middlemen acting as purchasing agents is a means for countries such as Iran and China (and possibly others) to clandestinely obtain weapons tech via U.S. surplus auctions, thus circumventing security measures in place to prevent the transfer of our weapons technologies to our enemies.

In the case of Iran, this places critical replacement components for its squadrons of F-14 Tomcat fighters within reach.

In one case described in the article a Pakistani broker acquired components for Iran (and delivered same), was imprisoned, then resumed business, doing the same for Iran.

The question is: why was this weapons broker allowed to access to U.S. military surplus after having been convicted of funneling tech to our enemies? How many other such brokers are operating in the same fashion, as yet undetected, or have been caught, convicted, then allowed repeat access?

This is a troubling breach of national security.

The article points out that the U.S. has retired the F-14 Tomcat, and Iran is the only country currently flying this aircraft. Sounds to me like all of the surplus parts for the Tomcat should not be released for auction as the only country currently able to utilize them is Iran.

How, such has not been the case. The Defense Reutilization and Marketing Division has not only sold Tomcat parts to brokers who intended (and attmepmted) to ship the parts to Iran, the Customs Department caught them, returned the parts, and the DRMD resold them yet again, to a different set of brokers intent on shipping the same parts to, you guessed it, Iran.

Although the Customs Department has managed to stop these shipments, how many other shipments managed to get through the system and into Iran?

Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT) stated "The military should not sell or give away any sensitive military equipment. If we no longer need it, it needs to be destroyed - totally destroyed…the Department of Defense should not be supplying sensitive military equipment to our adversaries, our enemies, terrorists."

He's got that right. If it isn't destroyed, then the components, where feasible, should be stripped down and recycling any basic materials possible (metals, plastics, etc.).

Snow, At Last!

We finally recevied our first decent snowfall since the beginning of November. At least now it is cold enough that it should stick around for awhile.

Here in rural Minnesota, we received snow somewhere around 5 inches in depth. It's a fine, light powder that is great to look at, but makes for lousy snowballs and snowmen. Sigh! I may have to try and get the stuff to cling together enough to build something for Miss Anna anyway.

DFL Rejects Taxcuts For the Poor

It's the first full week of business in the Minnesota State House of Representatives, and already, the DFL is shooting down tax cuts, this time tax cuts that would help those on the lower end of the income scale. The amendment that the DFL shot down was put forth on a tax bill called for a .5 percent cut in the rate for those in the lowest income brackets. This after all their claims of wanting to help the poor. The DFL labeled "germain" five other amendments to thier tax bill.

It is becoming obvious that the DFL agenda includes tax increases across the board.

One plan to watch out for is an expansion of the Transit Taxing District. The word floating around is that Shelly Madore (DFL - St.Paul), is pushing to expand the taxing district to include all of the counties in the 7-county metro area, eliminating exemptions for portions of counties that lay in more rural areas, such as Lakeville, Farmington and all rural townships.

Also being floated is a change in the levy to allow property taxes raised for transit to be used for operating expenses as well as investment for infrastruture. Currently, these levies can only be used for infrastucture. If this lna goes through, watch out, as the amound of tax monies needed to operate light rail will escalate the property tax burden on all home owners in the taxing district.

This week, DFL Representatives voted themselves a pay increase by using rules to increase per diem. For many representatives, per diem is not taxed. For those members that live more than 50 miles from the capitol, this also includes a housing allowance change, from the historical January-June period, when the House is in session, to a year round allowance. At a rate of $1200 per month, TAX FREE.

I'll try and get more info on this in the next week.

Democrats, gotta love 'em. Tell you they are there for the little guy, and they are the little guy that they are looking out for.

Rep. Wu: Klingons In The White House!

As noted in my previous Moonbat Award…it looks like I was a bit premature with my choice. Not because Bill has changed my mind, but because I had no idea that this one was coming my way. Rep. David Wu (D-OR), on the House Floor on the subject of War in Iraq. And I have to think Bill to alerting me to this. He found it on HotAir, which is one of the best places to go if you are looking for political video. They, in turn, found it courtesy of one of the users in their community. I guess this means I had better make HotAir.com a more frequent stop than once or twice a week.

The gist is that Wu, talking about the war in Iraq makes references to the Bush Administration as being like Klingons, or, more accurately, like Faux Klingons, as Bush never went to war (of course, Rep. Wu never even served in the Armed Forces). It's a real hoot.

I think I'll be having some fun with this one over the weekend as it is inspiring a story idea. Thanks, Bill!

GOPBoggers January '07 Straw Poll

The GOPBloggers has been running amonthly straw poll to see who the front runners are in the opnion of the Blogosphere. The poll is updated monthly with a few variations in questions and the candidate list is kept up to date as the field of players changes.

It's a short survey and well worth filling out.

Obama On Iraq

This is off of Breitbart.com:

"We're not going to baby sit a civil war," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told NBC's "Today" Show. He said the Democratic-controlled Congress would not undercut troops already in Iraq but would explore ways to restrict the president from expanding the mission.

"Restrict the president from expanding the mission?!" How does he intend to do that without violating his oath of office. The Constitution made the president "Commander in Chief" of the military, not Senator Barack Obama. Congress controls the budget, the president commands the troops. The only way Obama and the other chickendoves in Congress can impact troop deployments is to cut the military budget. Are they prepared to do so?

Obama also called current operations as "babysitting a civil war." What the heck did he think we were doing in Somalia in '93?

Whether or not Iraq is in civil war, and it is at least on the brink of such, if we withfraw from Iraq, we will have another Cambodia, with hundreds of thousands, if not millions, dead. Iran will invade and expand their Facist Theocracy into Iraq, while putting a stanglehold on oil exports from that region.

Is Obama and the rest of the chickendoves in Congress willing to have that on their hands? Do they really truly care?

New York Fire Department Bans Family Photos From Lockers

This is absolutely shocking. (FoxNews)

n a stunning crackdown, the FDNY has demanded that all personal decorations, including flags and pictures of colleagues killed on Sept. 11, 2001, be removed from lockers, WCBSTV reported.

The controversy began two weeks ago when a sexually explicit slogan was reported at Engine 230 in Brooklyn. In response, FDNY Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta banned all decorations, including American flags, "Support Our Troops" stickers, pictures of family and Mass cards.

I can understand the removal of a sexual explicit slogan, however, removing photos of friends who were killed on 9/11? Family photos? American Flags? And so on.

And what do the pinheads say?

"No city agency should permit the work place to display inappropriate stuff," said Mylan Denerstein, the FDNY's deputy commissioner for legal affairs.

Since when is a photo of a fallen comrade, or the American flag, considered "inappropriate stuff?"

Photos of fallen comrades and photos of friends is a warm reminder of why first responders do what they do: they put their lives on the line for all of us, each and everyday. Taking these decorations away from them is not only a slap in the face, but also detrimental to team morale.

How long will it take for the pinheads in charge to realize that they made a mistake and apologize?

In the meantime, the firefighters union has engaged legal council and is pursuing the matter through the courts. The Union is also sending American Flag decals to every fire fighter in the department. This is one of the few times where I actually agree with what a union is doing.

As for Scoppetta and Denerstein, what kind of leadership example are they setting? Perhaps they should be replaced.

Suzanne Somers' Moonbat Moment

Suzanne Somers lost her home in Malibu to fire this week. I have no doubt that losing your home, whether it was due to an earthquake, flood, or fire (as in this case) is certainly no fun. It’s a disaster. And, normally, I wouldn’t write about such. However, Suzanne Somers is a special case. This is off of the LA Times:

Somers bit her lip before making a statement for microphones thrust in front of her. In proper Hollywood fashion, that statement was scripted.

It wasn't as though she'd lost a son or daughter in Iraq, she said.

"My nature is to look at the glass half full," Somers said, reading from a piece of paper. "I haven't lost a loved one. We will rebuild, and I truly believe we will learn something great from this experience."

Okay, I agree. Losing one’s home to a fire is not like losing a loved one in Iraq. I have no doubt about that. What bugs me is that she is using this fire as a podium to get out her political views. It is probably the only chance she has had to do so, as most people don’t even remember her these days.

The other point that bugs me, if she had to say something like that, is why she chose Iraq as her reference point rather than losing a loved one in 9/11?

Perhaps she is bucking for a Moonbat Award.

And who am I to disappoint. Congratualtions Suzanne Somers, you are a Moonbat.

Dubya's Speech on Iraq

President Bush addressed the nation this evening, presenting a new plan for victory in Iraq. The new plan is a welcome change in our policy in Iraq.

In his speech, President Bush acknowledged one of the greatest successes of the Islamic Terrorists operating there, and that was the bombing of the Golden Mosque of Samara, which resulted in the Shia population forming death squads to retaliate against the Sunni population. It further escalated into a vicious cycle of sectarian violence.

Part of the new plan for Iraq includes increasing troop deployments there by 20,000 soldiers, something the Democrats who now control Congress will, no doubt, do their utmost to prevent, as they would rather implement a complete withdrawal of U.S. forces. All I can say is, it's about time. This should have occurred within the first months following the bombing of the Golden Mosque.

Five additional brigades to be deployed to Baghdad, where they have been desperately as most of the violence is occurring within some 30 miles of Baghdad.

Here's a part of the transcript of the speech (FoxNews):

The situation in Iraq is unacceptable to the American people - and it is unacceptable to me. Our troops in Iraq have fought bravely. They have done everything we have asked them to do. Where mistakes have been made, the responsibility rests with me.

It is clear that we need to change our strategy in Iraq. So my national security team, military commanders, and diplomats conducted a comprehensive review. We consulted Members of Congress from both parties, allies abroad, and distinguished outside experts. We benefited from the thoughtful recommendations of the Iraq Study Group - a bipartisan panel led by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Congressman Lee Hamilton. In our discussions, we all agreed that there is no magic formula for success in Iraq. And one message came through loud and clear: Failure in Iraq would be a disaster for the United States.

The consequences of failure are clear: Radical Islamic extremists would grow in strength and gain new recruits. They would be in a better position to topple moderate governments, create chaos in the region, and use oil revenues to fund their ambitions. Iran would be emboldened in its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Our enemies would have a safe haven from which to plan and launch attacks on the American people. On September the 11th, 2001, we saw what a refuge for extremists on the other side of the world could bring to the streets of our own cities. For the safety of our people, America must succeed in Iraq.

Yep, he's right. The withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq would give the Fundamentalist Islamic terrorists the green light to take over Iraq, and install a fascist theocracy similar to that which currently rules Iran. It would also send a signal to Iran that the U.S. would not come to Iraq's aid should they invade once U.S. forces are withdrawn. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Iraqis would die. Any redeployment of U.S. forces would come too late for many Iraqis if (and when) such events should (and would) occur.

Another 4,000 troops are to be deployed to the Anbar province, an area that al-Qaeda has made the most dangerous area outside of Baghdad. That's about a brigade in strength. It's a large region, so it will most likely have to be heavily integrated with Iraqi forces to be fully effective.

I don't know it these plans are sufficient to bring peace to Iraq. It is, however, a good start. A step in what I believe is the right direction. It is also the message I've been waiting to hear for some time now. It is time to take off the gloves and let the military do what they have been trained to do: win the war in Iraq.

Chavez Again...

Comrade Hugo Chavez has been sworn in for his third six-year term as "president" of Venezuela. The Fidel Castro wanna be has stated "Fatherland. Socialism or death...I swear it."

For those who still believe that Comrade Chavez is a pillar of democracy, think again. It was just a few days ago that Comrade Chavez announced plans to nationalize (that’s a PC term for confiscate) electrical and telecom sectors. He has also made it clear that other business sectors will be subject to confiscation as well.

From FoxNews:

Chavez, an admirer of Fidel Castro, has said he is crafting a new sort of "21st Century Socialism." Critics say it is starting to look like old-fashioned totalitarianism by a leader obsessed with power.

On Monday, Chavez pledged to nationalize "strategic" power and telecommunications companies and said that he will ask the National Assembly for special powers allowing him to enact a series of laws by decree. Among those moves, he said, "all of that which was privatized, let it be nationalized."

Yep, totalitarianism is on the rise in Venezuela, like it or not. If they give Chavez the power ihe is asking for, the ability to enact laws by decree, that will circumvent all checks and balances on his power, putting him solidly in a position to run Venezuela as Castro has run Cuba for nearly half a century. It's that bit about enacting laws by decree that gives me the willies. Reminds me of Germany in the 1930s and the rise to power of another totalitarian schmuck.

And some folks here in the U.S. call Comrade Chavez a great leader, and that Bush is the totalitarian. Must be the same ones who slept through their high school class on American Government.

Somalia Al-Qaeda Leader Killed

Yahoo News is reporting that Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, who was believed to be one of the planners for the 1998 Embassy bombings, was killed during U.S. airstrikes in Somalia.

The airstrike in which this terrorist was killed involved the use of AC-130 (Spectre/Spooky) gunship, destroying an al-Qaida training camp located in Somalia. Details are sketchy beyond several camps were targeted and at least one AC-130 gunship was involved.

The terrorist Fazul was a senior member of al-Qaeda in Somalia. He is also believed to have planned the car bombing of a beach in Kenya in 2002.

Venezuela Steps Toward Communism

According to a FoxNews piece, Comrade Hugo Chavez, the "I wanna be president for life" leader of Venezuela has announced plans to nationalize all of Venezuela's telecom and electrical companies as well as amend that country's constitution to a socialist "republic."

During a televised speech he proclaimed, "All of that which was privatized, let it be nationalized."

I have no doubt that the media (print and broadcast) will be next on his hit list of industries that should be controlled by the government, or, more accurately, by El Presidente Comrade Chavez.

Where socialism rules, there you will NOT find Liberty. There will, however, be totalitarianism.

I'd ask what Jazz and Annarboriter would say, but they haven't posted since this earlier piece on Comrade Chavez

Israel PLans Potential Strike On Iran Nuke Facilities

This is off of FoxNews:

Israel has drawn up secret plans to destroy Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities with tactical nuclear weapons, according to a report in the Sunday Times of London.

The paper cites several Israeli military sources saying that two Israeli air force squadrons are training to blow up an Iranian facility using low-yield nuclear “bunker-busters.”

Bunker-busters is probably what will be needed as there is no doubt that Iran learned a lesson for Iraq and the strike Israel made against their nuke facilities some years back.

With the new Congress being ut in the hands of the Democrats, it is obvious that: A) no such plans will come from the U.S. and B) their will be pressure form Congres on Israel not to execute such plans.

Of course, I would rather that such action could be taken without the use of nukes, low-yield or otherwise.

Democrats Push For Increase in High School Dropout Rate

Now that the new Congress has been seated and control has been passed to the Democrats, one of their top priorities is raising the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour. Here is a part of what George Will has to say on the issue:

Democrats consider the minimum-wage increase a signature issue. So, consider what it says about them:

Most of the working poor earn more than the minimum wage, and most of the 0.6 percent (479,000 in 2005) of America's wage workers earning the minimum wage are not poor. Only one in five workers earning the federal minimum lives in families with earnings below the poverty line. Sixty percent work part time, and their average household income is well over $40,000. (The average and median household incomes are $63,344 and $46,326, respectively.)

Forty percent of American workers are salaried. Of the 75.6 million paid by the hour, 1.9 million earn the federal minimum or less, and of these, more than half are under 25 and more than a quarter are between ages 16 and 19. Many are students or other part-time workers. Sixty percent of those earning the federal minimum or less work in restaurants and bars and earn tips -- often untaxed, perhaps -- in addition to wages. Two-thirds of those earning the federal minimum today will, a year from now, have been promoted and be earning 10 percent more. Raising the minimum wage predictably makes work more attractive relative to school for some teenagers and raises the dropout rate. Two scholars report that in states that allow people to leave school before 18, a 10 percent increase in the state minimum wage caused teenage school enrollment to drop 2 percent.

Many of the points Will makes are well known, even to me. For instance, only one in five Americans earning minimum wage are impoverished. Sounds like a lot, until you realize that only .06% (yep, less than ONE PERCENT) of Americans earn the minimum wage (or less).

As pointed out, many work in restaurants as waiters/waitresses, or other areas that earn tips. A significant number of minimum wager earners are high school students.

One point that Will makes that I did not know, and this is a good one, is that a 10 percent increase in the state minimum wage (in states that set their own, higher, minimum wages) has resulted in a 2 percent drop in enrollment. This is significant. What happens is that these extra dropouts from high school then end up on the downside of the economic scale, perpetuating and increasing the reliance on welfare programs.

I do not understand why Liberals and others believe raising minimum wages is a good idea.

Sheehan First Moonbat of 2007

Looks like we're starting the New Year off with an early Moonbat Award. Cindy Sheehan strikes again, this time, along with other anti-Liberation zealots, breaking up a press conference that was being held by House Democrats. Off of FoxNews:

We didn't put you in power to work with the people that have been murdering hundreds of thousands of people since they have been in power," Sheehan said. "We put you in power to be opposition to them finally and we're the ones who put them in power."

Actually, how is she so certain that it was the anti-Liberate Iraq zealots who are responsible for the shift in Congress? But that is a minor point. The big point is the first line where she proclaims the the United States has "been murdering hundreds of thousands of people since they have been in power." Meaning, she believes that President Bush has murdered hundreds of thousands of people.

Sure, in the conducting of military operations in Iraq, a lot of people have died. Most of those that died as a result of U.S. or Coalition Forces action, were terrorists. Like Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, killed June 7, 2006 by military operations. Apparently, in the world-view of Sheehan, this was murder!

This is not to say that some innocents have not been killed by accident. There has been. For the most part, most (nearly all?) of the people that have been killed, at least as far as non-terrorists are concerned, have been killed by terrorists. And sectarian death squads like those run by Muqtada al-Sadr.

Congratulations, Cindy Sheehan. You are the first Moonbat of 2007.

The Looming Tower

Every American is acutely aware of the terrorist attack on 9/11. Many Americans are not aware of the many threads of fate that is the web of al-Qaeda and International Islamic Terrorism that lead up to that horrible day.

The Looming Tower: al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 by Lawrence Wright is a brilliant book covering the Islamic Fundamentalist movement from it's early days through 9/11 and the early aftermath of that tragic event when some 3,000 people were murdered in multiple terrorist attacks within the United States.

It begins with an Egyptian named Sayyid Qutb and his journey to the United States a few years after the end of World War 2. He is described as a man who was torn between Islam and the modern world, and he chose Islam, and pushed for violent overthrow of the secular government of Egypt. That is the root beginnings of al-Qaeda, which one realizes as one reads the Looming Tower. It is a complex web of revolution, ideologues, terrorism and jihad.

Qutb is where The Looming Tower begins. It proceeds on to Zawahiri and the rise of al-Jihad in Egypt; the Mujahideen in Afghanistan; Osama bin Ladin from his childhood through to the climatctic events of 9/11.

Terrorist acts covered are numerous, as well as assassinations and coups attempts in Egypt. The terrorist successes as well as their known failures.

The good guys are also covered, and the many layers of bureaucratic red tape that hindered investigations that may have prevented the attacks of 9/11. One of the most notable was an FBI agent named John O'Neill, who retired from the FBI and took a job as a security consultant at the World Trade Center, just days before the attack of 9/11.

Another is Prince Turki of Saudi Arabia, who recently stepped down from his post as ambassador to the United States, and his many roles in dealing with Saudi Arabia's wayward stepson, Osama bin Ladin.

It's a chilling history of terror and fundamentalism, and introduced me to terms like Takfir and Kafir, both terms that refer to someone as being non-Muslim and subject to being killed in the name of Allah.

It is a book well worth reading. It will remind you, or enlighten you, as to what we're up against where al-Qaeda, and other suggest terrorist organizations, are concerned, and that we dare not lose.

Dems Plan To Cut GOP From Legislative Discourse

Coming soon to a Congress near you: Bipartisanship, Democratic style. Democrats are now planning on using House rules to prevent Republicans for offering alternative measures to the agenda being set forth by Democrats. This is to assure that their agenda will pass, as opposition will be short-circuited. And Pelosi calls this bipartisanship.

It is not surprising that after pledging to run the most ethical (or did they say ethically challenged: see Rep. Conyers, D-Mich.) and bipartisan House, that they should renege on such promises not that they have been handed a majority in Congress.

What is that old saying, "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely."

The Democrats intention to use House rules to force their Socialist agenda through Congress is not really that surprising. They claim to be torn between "allowing" Republicans to have some say in proposed legislation, or cutting them out completely to prevent Republicans from blocking their agenda.

In other words, politics as usual, except there may be more hostility towards Republicans as they are forced to take the backseat as the new minority party.

It looks like we'll be in for a wild ride during the next Congress. Especially over the first few weeks. Should be fun.

Coalition To Deal with Mahdi Army

This qualifies for the "it's about time" award. Off of Reuters:

U.S.-led forces are likely to launch a limited New Year offensive against Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's Mehdi Army militia, blamed for sectarian death squad killings, senior Iraqi officials say.

The Pentagon, in a report last month, described Mehdi Army militias as the biggest threat to Iraq's security and diplomats say Washington is impatient to confront them.

Moqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Malitia has been a major pain in the neck. When he and his thugs first turned up on the scene in 2004, I believed that U.S. and coalition forces would deal with Sadr straightaway. Unfortunately, a deal was cut, leaving Sadr to regroup his forces before starting trouble again.

Many Iraqis accuse Sadr of being behind many of the death squads operating in Iraq. Although he claims to not be involved, there is a much higher likelihood that Sunni claims against him are correct. There is also a high probability that he is in league with Iran, receiving significant support from that country. That is also a very high probability as it is known that Iran is attempting to undermine the democratically elected government of Iraq by supplying arms and men to terrorist and anti-government groups in Iraq.

Dealing with Sadr and eliminating his armed militias is one more step on the road to liberty for Iraq. And the sooner he is dealt with, the better.
