Cullen Calls For Silencing Scientific Debate On Global Warming
Ms. Cullen, a self-proclaimed expert on Global Warming has this to say about those who do not subscribe to her viewpoint:
I'd like to take that suggestion a step further. If a meteorologist has an AMS Seal of Approval, which is used to confer legitimacy to TV meteorologists, then meteorologists have a responsibility to truly educate themselves on the science of global warming. (One good resource if you don't have a lot of time is the Pew Center's Climate Change 101.)Meteorologists are among the few people trained in the sciences who are permitted regular access to our living rooms. And in that sense, they owe it to their audience to distinguish between solid, peer-reviewed science and junk political controversy. If a meteorologist can't speak to the fundamental science of climate change, then maybe the AMS shouldn't give them a Seal of Approval. Clearly, the AMS doesn't agree that global warming can be blamed on cyclical weather patterns. It's like allowing a meteorologist to go on-air and say that hurricanes rotate clockwise and tsunamis are caused by the weather. It's not a political statement...it's just an incorrect statement.
Well, she is half-right, there is a big difference between peer-reviewed science and junk pseudo-science with a political agenda. Unfortunately, the peer review process is controlled by those who subscribe to "the one true way" of it's man's fault the Earth is warming.
Her call for decertification of meteorologists who to not subscribe to the "one true wayism" of the "Global Warming" is an outrage.
Scientific consensus can only be given when the theory is proven to be law, which in the case of man's contributions to carbon emissions and the overall impact is still under debate, it is people like Ms. Cullen who want to silence differing opinions.
What is laughable, is that Cullen calls herself a scientist, and a meteorologist, yet she claims that it is incorrect to state that hurricanes rotate clockwise. Here's a bit of real scientific facts for Ms. Cullen (from wikipedia):
A tropical cyclone is a warm storm system fueled by thunderstorms near its center. It feeds on the heat released when moist air rises and the water vapor in it condenses. The term describes the storm's origin in the tropics and its cyclonic nature, which means that its circulation is counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Tropical cyclones are distinguished from other cyclonic windstorms such as nor'easters, European windstorms, and polar lows by the heat mechanism that fuels them, which makes them "warm core" storm systems. Depending on their location and strength, there are various terms by which tropical cyclones are known, such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, and tropical depression.
Egads! She's supposed to have a Ph.D in this stuff. In her case Ph.D. must mean "Piled higher and Deeper."
It gets better, or worse, depending on your point of view. From the epw.sentate.gov blog:
Cullen's call for decertification of TV weatherman who do not agree with her global warming assessment follows a year (2006) in which the media, Hollywood and environmentalists tried their hardest to demonize scientific skeptics of manmade global warming. Scott Pelley, CBS News 60 Minutes correspondent, compared skeptics of global warming to "Holocaust deniers" and former Vice President turned foreign lobbyist Al Gore has repeatedly referred to skeptics as "global warming deniers."
And:
In addition, Cullen's December 17, 2006 episode of "The Climate Code" TV show, featured a columnist who openly called for Nuremberg-style Trials for climate skeptics. Cullen featured Grist Magazine's Dave Roberts as an eco-expert opining on energy issues, with no mention of his public call to institute what amounts to the death penalty for scientists who express skepticism about global warming. See: http://epw.senate.gov/fact.cfm?party=rep&id=264568
These people are determined to silence opposition opinion and research that contradicts their assertions. This is scary stuff.
Yet, Cullen is undeterred. She calls herself a scientist and a skeptic. Yet her writings on her own blog show otherwise.
On her blog, a comment posted on her blog included a link to a site called Friends of Science, which has lots of useful information. On the front page is a chart that shows some interesting trends, including sun sport activity in relation to carbon emissions and warming. There is more to Global Warming than meets the eye, regardless of the source.
There are also a number of other sites out there doing similar work, as well as a number of publications, including Satannic Gases from the Cato Institute.
The bottom line is this: silencing opposing viewpoints is about as un-American as you can get regardless of the issue. And comparing people who question the validity of the "one true way of global warming" to "holocaust deniers" as is being done on a routine basis, is outrageous.
