Britain Accomodates al-Sadr
August 5th, 2008 | by Sqotty |I ran across this initially on Michelle Malkin’s blog, and am as stunned as she is that the politicians running the U.K. would pull a Neville Chamberlain by brokering a deal with Muqtada al-Sadr that resulted in British troops in Iraq sitting on the sidelines while the recent Battle of Basra raged between the terrorist Mahdi Army and U.S. and Iraqi forces.
This is not a reflection on the fine soldiers that make up the British Army. I’ve had the opportunity to become acquainted with some headed to Afghanistan earlier this year (over a bottle of Scotch). This is a rant against the politicians who give “special accommodations” with a terrorist bent on killing U.S. troops and destroying the liberty in Iraq that so many U.S. and British soldiers have bled for.
From the Times
A secret deal between Britain and the notorious al-Mahdi militia prevented British Forces from coming to the aid of their US and Iraqi allies for nearly a week during the battle for Basra this year, The Times has learnt.
Four thousand British troops - including elements of the SAS and an entire mechanised brigade - watched from the sidelines for six days because of an “accommodation” with the Iranian-backed group, according to American and Iraqi officers who took part in the assault.
Why would the British Ministry of Defense make such a deal with a terrorist thug? Who, aside from Des Browne, was involved?
US advisers who accompanied the Iraqi forces into the fight were shocked to learn of the accommodation made last summer by British Intelligence and elements of al-Mahdi Army, the militia loyal to Moqtada al-Sadr, the radical Shia Muslim cleric.
I hate to be critical of our British allies, and this is targeted at their political leadership, NOT their military, but you don’t cut deals with the bad guys. What the British Ministry of Defense did, by making a deal with the devil, er, al-Sadr, was so French.
