Taxes Are Revolting
September 3rd, 2008 | by Sqotty |Voting for Liberals, especially Liberal Democrats, is taxing. Let’s face it; Barack Obama and Joe Biden haven’t met a tax hike they didn’t like. Same with Hillary and most of the other Democrats in Congress, as well as Democrats elected at State and local levels. They love raising taxes. They love the power to be able to take money away from hardworking Americans and spend it like a bunch of drunken sailors on shore leave. Except that is an insult to drunken sailors. Why is it that they seem to think they have a right to take our money and waste it on government programs that most Americans do not benefit from?
It could be said that Conservatives, especially Conservative Republicans, haven’t seen a tax cut they didn’t like. Quite frankly, neither have I. Tax cuts provide incentives for people to excel and expand their means. Tax increases have the exact opposite, stifling the drive to succeed, as well as driving the economy down and reducing opportunity for those on the lowest rung of our society from being able to climb up the ladder of wealth.
There is another, more fundamental difference, between Conservatives and Liberals when it comes to taxation. Conservatives understand that the reason our great nation came into existence, through revolution, was as a direct result of a tax revolt. The Stamp Act and the Townshend Act are amongst the most notable taxes that riled the Colonials.
Today, many of the taxes are hidden from us: excise taxes on gas, tires, alcohol, tobacco, even fishing gear. All of it is buried in the price we pay at the time of purchase. Sales taxes are piled on top of that (except gasoline, where the sales tax is built into the price listed on the pump). Then there are the taxes withheld from our paychecks: Federal, State, and sometimes even local income taxes; social security taxes; medicare taxes. We don’t think much about those taxes, except once a year when we file our tax returns, because it is money we never see. Many people even look at it as a forced savings plan as they get a refund for the overpayment, rather than as giving government an interest free loan.
What would happen if, as was supposed to happen, income tax withholding ceased and people received their paychecks without those deductions, having to pay as they go on a monthly basis, as was done prior to World War 2? Simple…people would see the money that government is soaking them for and demand their taxes be cut. We would see a tax revolt. And this is why Congress refuses to remove income tax withholding, just because it makes it easier for them to pass tax increases. We don’t notice it after a while because we never have that money hit our checking accounts.
And that is exactly why our tax system needs to be reformed, and income taxes ended, or withholding eliminated. If working Americans had to write a check to Uncle Sam every month, or even every quarter, Congress would have no choice but to cut taxes and stop spending money like Ted Kennedy on a weekender on Chappaquiddick.
