Lord, What a Week
October 12th, 2008 | by Sqotty |It has been crazy here at the home front. Zero time for writing as I have been putting in a lot of hours at the office. And a couple of classes.
But I am through this current week and am still a little surprised by the doings on Wall Street, with the continued bear run as the market hits the toilet. Like everyone else with 401k plans and IRAs, things are really hurting in the old retirement plan. But we are entering a major buying opportunity. Just not sure when things are going to hit rock bottom and begin to rebound. Soon, I hope.
In the meantime, oil prices have plummeted, bringing the price at the pump down to $2.80/gallon here in Minnesota. Never thought I would see gas below $3 a gallon, especially since Minnesota increased the excise tax on gas. I guess this means the Dems were right - nobody noticed (except those of us paying attention) that the new gas tax rates went into effect recently. Three things brought about the decline in gas prices: the dollar regaining some value against the Euro (a darn good ting) and people are driving less or switching to more fuel efficient vehicles.
I do advocate the use of hybrids. I’ve been thinking of buying one, or at least something that gets better mileage than my Ranger. It needs to happen, not that the Ranger will be sold. I need a truck out here on the “farm” for all of the landscaping projects and other things that require hauling materials out to the country.
