St. Olaf Prof. Attacks Free Speech, Steals Campaign Lawn Signs

November 4th, 2008 | by Sqotty |

Northfield, a city that carries the moniker of Cows, Colleges and Contentment may need a sign update after a St. Olaf professor is forced to resign after being charged with stealing campaign signs. I think it is a no-brainer to figure out which campaign signs he stole: McCain/Palin. He was also arrogant enough in his assumption that he would get a way with it by writing about it on the Huffington Post. After all, Northfield is filled with Lefties (which is why it should be Cows, Colleges and Commies), so who is really going to care.

From the Northfield News:

Philip Busse, the St. Olaf College professor who admitted to stealing campaign signs in a national political blog read by millions, has resigned.

What he posted on the Huffington Post is:

By early October, however, there were no McCain-Palin campaign signs on the eastbound stretch of Highway 19. It wasn’t because loyalties had switched, but because I pulled them out.

And that goes for the oversized 4 x 8 foot mini-billboard in front of the ranch-style farm house. It barely fit in the back of my Subaru. But I carted it away with seven other lawn signs that, like a ninja under the cover of cloudy Minnesota night, I “removed.”

signs in Busse\'s trash

Busse, in his piece on the HP, admits that what he was doing was not only morally wrong, but also illegal. He did it any way. By his own admission he committed eight separate acts of campaign sign theft. The Northfield News has not reported as to how many counts Busse is actually being charged with.

The signs that Busse stole were on the rural region of Highway 19, which is one of the main arteries leading into Northfield, linking it directly with Highway 35. This stretch of road receives substantial amount of traffic on a daily basis as it is the main route into Northfield from most points north and south.

In all fairness to St. Olaf, Busse has resigned from his position at the Liberal Arts College.
