Laws Don’t Matter in Massachusetts

A Democratic push to appoint a successor to the late Sen. Edward Kennedy is sparking a political tempest in Massachusetts, infuriating Republicans and dividing Democrats who only five years ago passed a law requiring that voters decide on Senate vacancies.
The State law is clear in that a special election MUST be held in order to fill the vacancy, a law that the late senator supported, until it became inconvenient in his final days. Changing the law because it is inconvenient is a very bad idea.
Hey, Minnesota went some six months without full representation in the Senate while Norm Coleman surrendered his seat to Bozo the Clown. Massachusetts can survive as well. The sky won’t fall, and it isn’t the end of the world.
