For What?

When I woke up this morning and listened to the news, I thought it must be April 1st as I listened to an announcement that Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been highly politicized for years, destroying what credibility it still had when it was awarded to Jimmy Carter, the architect of the Totalitarian Theocracy that runs Iran and the broker of the now nuclear armed North Korea. His award was clearly designed as a political slap in the face of then President Bush and American leadership on the liberation of Iraq. and the Global War on Terror. Awarding this “honor” to Barack Obama confirms the continued irrelevance and lack of credibility of this once great award.

What has Obama done to justify his receiving the Nobel Peace Prize? Nothing! He has not ended war in the Middle East, he has not liberated any oppressed people. He had been in office as president for a mere 11 days at the time he was nominated, so there is no action he has done as President of the United States to justify this award. What about as senator? He voted “present” more often than any other member of the Senate during his four years in that august body. And that was when he bothered to show up. The question that people are asking is what did he do to win this award?

I did a quick check of the Nobel Peace Prize on Wikipedia, and found, at the time I checked it, the following statement:

The Nobel Peace Prize (Swedish, Danish and Norwegian: Nobels fredspris) is one of five Nobel Prizes bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel, which apparently needs no actual accomplishment to receive.

How very true!

If Obama had any interest in helping the Nobel Peace Prize, he would refuse it and suggest that the award be given to Ronald Reagan, who’s efforts brought down the Berlin Wall and the fall of the Soviet Union so that millions of people could live free. But I won’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

For a good analysis, head over to Yahoo news. I think Jennifer Loven hit it on the head: It’s all about hating Bush and his policies.

Note: Too bad wikipedia changed their entry since I took that screen shot.
