Up in Oour County, St. Louis, Commissioner Chris Dahlberg lead a charge for a 0% tax levy increase. Unfortunately, his board voted 5-1 (Dahlberg opposed) to increase property taxes by 1.8%. I don't know if anyone has seen this but Commissioner Dahlberg has also developed a new economic tool: the Crunch Factor. It measures the negative effects of property tax increases in a prolonged economic downturn.

I've decide to utilize my marginal bully pulpit in defense of what Ezra Klein was implying. He obviously was not clear enough; perhaps an analogy would do the trick:

That business of same-day registration with "neighbors vouching" instead of legitimate ID is going to screw over statewide GOP candidates until it's fixed. Here's hoping y'all don't have to wait much longer for that. Dumb to require ID to buy a beer or a pack of smokes, but not to vote.

I'm not sure where you get the idea that I have bought into the fallacy that people "without military experience can be the authority regardiding our military operations". My whole point with Green is that he denigrates those of us who have chosen to server; he has bought into the fallacy that there is an "economic draft". Green also hates free speech, especially from those who espouse views that are contrary to their own.

There are plenty of people without military experience that can act with authority on our military operations. Dick Cheney and Condolezza Rice come to mind as examples. Of course they had access to the highest level of our military to help formulate their opinions on military operations.

You seem to buy off on the fallacy that somebody without military experience can be the authority regardiding our military operations. Yes, someone without experience has the right to comment/observe, but there is no insight to the observations.
Green obviously has an axe to grind - which protects his tenure. This makes him a wimp, not a threat. Consider the source...

Well, Montana, you obviously have NOT read Arizona's SB 1070, nor have you read the Constitution of the United States. Please take the time to do so.

As for your allegations on claims made by Jan Brewer, provide original source documentation to back it up.

"House Bill 2013" and "SB1070"

0 = Arizona
2 = USA/ Our Constitution/ We the People of the United States

We are a country that is ruled by the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence, not by the majority of the day. When you do not know the principles in these documents, therein lays the problem in losing when you are challenged in court.

This month of July 2010, our U.S. Federal courts have found the so called State of Arizona hate filled legislation namely "House Bill 2013" and "SB1070" Un-constitution (So much for the intellect of Jan Brewer, "Did you read the bills you signed?"). But we all know that they will go crying to the Supreme Court of the United States, please, please, please go. We will fight you in Arizona, any other state, and yes in Washington DC. We will not tire, we will not be silent and we will persevere, I promise you.

In my opinion the Republican Party has been taken over the most extreme of clans; the Baggers, Birthers and Blowhards (people who love to push their beliefs and hate on others while trying to take away the rights of those they just hate) and that's who they need to extract from their party if they real want to win in November. Good Luck, because as they said in WACO, "We Ain't Coming Out".

It's all about politics: Jan Brewer you were never elected to be Governor, but you have no problem trying to get elected on the back of undocumented workers, you loser (sure you may win but the long-term effects to your so called State is just beginning). Here is a partial list of your hate filled legislation;

1. S.B. 1070,
2. House Bill 2013
3. No permit conceal weapons law,
4. The famous Birthers law,
5. Banning Ethnic studies law,

6. Could she be behind the Mural in Prescott, Arizona, ordered to be whiten,
7. On deck to pass, no citizenship to babies born to undocumented workers,

8. If she can read she should look up Arizona's House Bill 2779 from two years ago (which was un-constitution and failed when legally challenged),
9. The boycotted Martin Luther King Day, what idiots don't want another holiday? Yes, you guessed it Arizona.

Well Arizona, you can keep boycotting new holidays, passing hate filled legislation and the rest of our country will continue to challenge you in court of law and Boycott your so-called state.

Lets face it, no one can real believe anything that comes out of Brewer's mouth, in an interview, this year, in an attempt to gain sympathy, she first said her father had died in Germany fighting the Nazi in World War II (which ended 1945) but of course we find out the truth that father was never in Germany and died in California in 1955. But we are suppose to believe everything else she says, right!

As they say in the World Cup: Gooooooooal!

Don't let MN Rep. Collin Peterson's vote against Obama's health care bill surprise you. He is not a true Blue Dog Dem. Nancy Pelosi, with whom he votes 93% of the time, let him off the health care hook since she could get the bill through the House without Peterson's vote. He was catching a lot of flak in his home district to the point of not holding town hall or even county meetings last August. I'm in his district. In past elections there have not been good candidates running against him; this year Peterson faces a very popular GOP conservative candidate.

I wholeheartedly agree with Diane Francis.
While you do not like this point of view, as you are thinking with your heart only, we will eventually have no choice.
Your view of a Utopian government has the maintenance of a democratic government at all times. The world does not work that way, as history shows, include the recent US policy following 9/11.
Things happen, we evolve and we have to change. Documents, such as bibles and constitutions are a guide and are for the era they have been written in.
You need to get over the fact that things stay the same.
Is the one child policy draconian? Absolutely. Is it necessary? Absolutely.
As for your suggestions:
- with more farmable land up north would come a lot less in the southern climates, where most of the population lives
- global warming is not a myth, although I do believe that the human impact on this natural earth cycle is less than advertised; still it's a fact
- 9 billion by 2050 is not a myth, all you have to do is count
- living a vegetarian lifestyle is not possible where vegetation doesn't (or will not) exist
- space colonization is a good idea but we do not have the time or the resources to realize this plan, until it is too late for millions of people

Draconian and alarmist are words a lot of people like to use, including you. How about planning and action though? I am sick of fat consumers not giving a rats as about the future of the planet or the living creatures on it.

Unfortunately, you are wrong in your reasoning. If they invest/save that additional$50K, as you assert, that money then becomes available to be loaned to businesses so that they can expand, or to individuals so that they can buy a house, remodel, or buy a new car.

"The more you tax people with high incomes, the less money they have to spend on consumer goods and services."

That's not reality. The reality is if you make more than $50,000 you're more likely to save the other $50,000, because people have limited time to spend their money. Basically your needs, physical and safety are met and then some (you also have money left over for leisure). Sure it's fine for people to save for once in awhile doing really expensive things like travel but realistically people spend less and save more past $50,000. When people hoard up the money doesn't go into the economy.

Trickle-down economics does NOT work. Trickle-up does.

At first glance it sounded like the border patrol agents were at fault, but while they might not have been absolutely polite, it does seem they were probably just doing their jobs, and this guy pulled an attitude. And I would love to see the video.

It would seem that The One is fervently trying to continue the work of Slick Willie... that is to say, that he is working dilligently to dismantle and destroy this nation, as we know it!

You are quite correct Sqotty. Obama was born an American citizen. Had he been born in another country of American citizens he would have dual citizenship. So anyone trying to trip up Obama with that line of reasoning might as well throw in the the moon landing hoax crowd. (By the way, the 40th anniversary of the alleged non-event is Monday)

The latest news is that the order to go to Afghanistan was rescinded, yesterday I think. The birthers are raving that this means that they "won." But there is no proof that the case had anything to do with the rescinding of the order.

It would be interesting to find out on what date Major Cook received notice that he was no longer being asked to serve in Afghanistan and whether it was by telephone or a letter sent by snail mail, or whatever.

The date of the filing of the suit by Cook was July 9 (I have it at the 9th, though some say the 8th), which was last Thursday (or it could be Wednesday), and the earliest stories saying that he was no longer being asked to go were last night.

That is six days or seven, but two of them were weekend days. It is unlikely that the Army could have decided to make a change from “go to Afghanistan” to “don’t go to Afghanistan” in only four or five days. It just doesn’t work that fast.

And besides, Cook volunteered to go to Afghanistan in the first place. He volunteered for Afghanistan on May 8, meaning that he volunteered to serve in Afghanistan while Obama was president. http://www.newspapersites.net/newspaper/columbus-ledger-enquirer-1.asp

Re born in a territory. I agree. There are those that believe that Lincoln was born in Indiana in 1809, while it was still a territory. However, others think the location was in Illinois. The reason for the confusion is that the records were lost, or perhaps there weren't any.
