We have watched the trailers and we even got the video game from Blockbuster @Home the other day. I know a lot of my co-workers at Dish have seen it and enjoyed the movie.

Comment on Vets For Freedom at the Fort Snelling Officers Club by Sqotty http://www.kowabunga.org/vets-for-freedom-at-the-fort-snelling-officers-club/comment-page-1/#comment-413 Sun, 21 Sep 2008 12:52:58 +0000 http://www.kowabunga.org/?p=1836#comment-413 Choice number 2 is where things are headed. Anbar province, which a couple of years ago was a major hotbed, has been turned over to Iraqi control. I also realize that if we pull out before the job is done, Muqtada al-Sadr and Iran will seize control of Iraq.

Not sure what you think my age is, but we’re not too far apart. I was 14 when we pulled out of Vietnam and 16 when Saigon fell to the communists.

The problem with Vietnam is we fought a defensive war, which is a losing proposition. And the South Vietnamese paid the price for that. I had a Vietnamese refuge friend when I lived in San Diego. She got out, her husband did not. The Communists eventually executed him.

My experience with Vietnam is strictly indirect; what was on the news and now in the books, and, of course, what those who did serve care to share.

1. Make it the 51st state
2. Turn it over to the locals ( so far that’s a police state.)
3. Kill everyone in the country.
Take your pick.
Whe I was your age I thought the same way about Viet Nam. Went twice, Killed to many, did no good. Same story, different year.

Comment on Take On DnD 4th Edition by James http://www.kowabunga.org/take-on-dnd-4th-edition/comment-page-1/#comment-337 Fri, 29 Aug 2008 21:01:35 +0000 http://www.kowabunga.org/?p=1928#comment-337 Well I agree with you very much but some of your examples are kind of bad. You put modern ethics too much into dnd, which I never cared for because it is fantasy. I have run games where nations did not have freedom of religion and slavery; those things are lawful-chaos inclined and not good-evil. It is how you act out religious persecution or how you treat your slaves that goes into the realm of good and evil. And yes, we can go on the dusty argument over the alignment system but ultimately it is a fantasy game which means that it is supposed to have these more “encoded” moral systems; it is what sets the tone for the battles that occur in a medieval fantasy game like DnD. And remember, it is medieval so some of your examples are anachronastic too the max. I think it is best you get the idea of drawing examples of the DnD alignment system from our world and just throw it out the window. We can both agree however that the alignment system and indeed all of 4e is not DnD; i do not care how many shitty games are rolled out each year, but to call this the successor to such a hallowed name is preposterious. Couldn’t they have just called it something else, like,”Rawr! Orcs!” or some nonchalant name like that. Druid and bard are going to be in “player 2 handbook.” which is pathetic when they plan to make another before they release the first one to make it clear their intention is to completely alienate from the gaming community. Yes, 3.5 is considered clunky by some but god damnit its DnD! It had features that set it apart from other fantasy games, and that was what we all know as DnD. 4E makes fantasy adventure so black and white and shitty. And do not get me started on trying to appeal to kiddies with shitty dragonborn races and angsty tieflings. What worse is both of these races embrace such lame stereotypes; the kind people make up JUST to be able to play a class that has horns. They are not even tieflings for christ sakes, they are a new race that hijacked the name and threw out the concept!
