New Series

We all know that the new series is out in the U.K. I have no idea what the availability of it is in the U.S.

I've seen the first two episodes.

"Rose" opens with the soon-to-become Doctor's companion, in a collapsed time day, then settles in for an intense, and suspesnful introduction into the world of the Doctor as she explores a room full of manequins that begin to move: Autons!

The new Doctor Who series is tighter and faster paced - it has to be, as both episodes that I have seen are 45 minutes in length.

The interior of the Tardis is completely different, no longer looking like something on a sound stage, but a truly alien interior.

"The End of the World" is full of aliens; the makeup is of the highest quality. The special effects is also of the highest caliber.

This one takes place on a space station 5 billion years in Earth's future as the Sun dies and the Earth is turned into a lump of charcoal. Okay, a bizzilion lumps of charcoal. There is, of course, much more going on than that.

The series looks good, the writing top notch, as Doctor Who has always been. Christopher Eccleston brings a different flavor of humor to the Doctor, and is a bit grittier than previous incarnations. Billie Piper is athletic and outgoing, and as show spokespeople have previously said, brings a touch of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to the role of a Doctor's companion.

Overall, I give the new Doctor an A+. See it when you can.

Doctor Whobucks

My friend, the "Winelord", sent me an email with a link to this story about Police Box being converted into a coffee shop. Now the best part is that it is in Glasgow, site of WorldCon 2005. You can bet there will be a pilgrimage to the Tardis Coffee Shop.

Doctor Who Meets Buffy?

Over on the Daily Scotsman, there is an article on how the new Doctor Who series will have a butt-kicking, monster bashing sidekick. One can only hope!

Tom Baker Interview

There is an excellent interview of Tom Baker over on Metro Cafe. He talks a great deal about Doctor Who, among other things. There are some really choice pieces in this excellent interview.

More Who? Who knows?

An article has popped up on SciFi Wire and Outpost Gallifrey have posted a short blurb that "Lorraine Heggessey, controller of BBC-1, has again expressed her wish to bring back Doctor Who on Saturday evenings...". There is a mention of "rights" to various elements, which can be referenced on the BBCi website. Here's hoping that they will seriously consider pursuing this, although, right now, it sounds like a lot of talk.

New Doctor Who spinoff, Deimos Rising

Outpost Gallifrey has an announcement from Reeltime Picures that there will be a new spinoff drama. According to the article posted, this is due out in the U.K. in October, in time for the Doctor's 40th anniversary. Timelords only know when it will hit the States.

Ninth Doctor Cast

The BBC on-line has a short article on casting Richard Grant as the 9th Doctor. Apparently this will be an animated film, not live action. However, the doctor is still the doctor.
