Liam Tasker and Theo – A Man and His Dog

March 11th, 2011 | by Sqotty |

I read about this yesterday and was very touched by the heroism and dedication of Lance Corporal Liam Tasker and his dog, Theo, who have taken the final journey home together after long and hard service in Afghanistan.

Lance Cpl. Liam Tasker, a dog handler with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, was killed in a firefight with insurgents in Helmand Province on March 1 as he searched for explosives with Theo, a bomb-sniffing springer spaniel mix. The dog suffered a fatal seizure hours later at a British army base, likely brought about by stress.

Military officials won’t go so far as to say Theo died of a broken heart – but that may not be far from the truth.

I think that in the case of Theo they may be more right than they think about it being a broken heart.

Theo’s ashes returned to the UK with Tasker’s remains, which is a fine tribute to both the man and the dog that served together in Harm’s Way. Indeed, the article contains a great deal of background on Tasker and his dog Theo, including calls for Theo to be decorated with the Dicken medal, an honor that I believe is well deserved.

For those who know me personally, you know what a dog lover I am, as well as a supporter of those who choose to serve their respective countries, as Tasker has done for his country, the United Kingdom.

My deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family of Lance Cpl. Liam Tasker. It is a tragic loss. Liam and Theo, rest well and God bless you. You will be greatly missed.
